A good squirt or two of catsup works as well if you don't have tomato paste on hand. This dish is perfect for using up leftover veggies, I often toss in chopped green beans or brussels sprouts (and I'm way more generous with the Worcestershire )
Oh and protip: you can add salt to the water when boiling the potatoes and it'll help season them evenly, just keep in mind how much salt will be added in other ways, like if you use salted butter.

Being a brit I always thought Americans didn't really do the UK style pies. This being a very UK thing I thought this Cottage Pie, was one of these, along with it's sibling Shepherds Pie. Looking at the comments there are a few who knew nothing of these two extremely comforting dishes. But great to see a regular UK fave being shown on here. You cooked it to perfection too, looks delicious.

Hahaha! I just made this just this last weekend but with ground turkey because that s what I had on hand. I also used a ras el hanout seasoning to give it a little Northern Africa taste to it.
So how timely is it that you posted it? You rock! Cheers!

We eat what we call Chinese Pie, not sure why it s called that but it s the ground beef on the bottom, a layer or cream corn and then the mashed potatoes. I m for sure going to try yours. It looks delicious. My family loves it too.

My uncle (who can't cook) used to make cottage pie every time I spent the night. He loaded it up with hot spices and served it drenched in Tabasco sauce. We would get up early and he would fish while I shit in the woods. Good Times.

Quebec's version is Pate Chinoise. 1 can of whole corn, 1 can cream corn, ground beef & your favorite seasonings, top with mashed potatoes. I enjoy how diff countries have a version of shepherds pie. yum!

Comfort food 101is the correct statement! What family would not like to come home to a dish of Cottage Pie on a cold day? I like the idea of using smoked-flavored cheese, too. Thank you!

A perfect dish to make for this time of year. The ultimate comfort food.
Top tip. Make the mixture the day before and let it rest in the fridge. It makes for a richer dish.

I used to make this all the time, almost identical, not sure why I quit. The smoked cheese sounds like a great bonus, thanks for the reminder. I love Cottage pie!
