SUBSCRIBE for more: Penang Street Food Tour: T-shirts: Today we’re going on a Malaysian street food tour on the mainland (Malay Peninsula) side of the state of Penang in Malaysia. While Penang island typically gets most of the attention, you’ll find some culinary gems across the bridge! Taman Bukit Curry Mee - We’re beginning this Malaysian street food tour with a generations old, Michelin Guide recommended, stall at the market for curry noodles. Price - 6 MYR ($1. 27) per bowl Restoran Ikan Bakar Din - One of the highlights of my eating trip to Penang was this ultimate amusement park of Malay food at its best. Price - About 120 MYR ($25. 48) for everything Aunty and Uncle Durian (Auntie Uncle Durian & Coconut Stall) - We had a little time in the afternoon and so I looked up durian stalls and found a friendly Aunty and Uncle. Ended up trying a Black Thorn Durian - 118 MYR ($25. 01) for whole durian - this is one of the most most famous and expensive durians, and it was spectacular. Lao San Tong Bak Kut Teh - Next up on this Malaysian street food tour we headed to a place many say serves the best bak kut teh in Penang. Price - 70. 80 MYR ($15. 00) for everything Bee See Heong - Next up, this restaurant hasn’t changed since it opened in 1966. The food, a mix of Chinese and Malay, is a gem. Price - 64 MYR ($13. 57) for everything When you’re in Penang, Malaysia, and if you love authentic local food, head over to the Malay Peninsular mainland of Penang for some incredible food. Follow on

As a Penangite myself living on the island, I find myself travelling to the mainland for food as well. You're right when you said that some of places on the island are too touristy. We feel it too, and so we keep these hidden gems on athe mainland to ourselves! But now, with your video, these places won't stay hidden for long! Hope you enjoyed Penang while you were there Mark & Ying! Micah's missing though.

Peppery bah kut teh is a mostly Singaporean thing, the vast majority of the bah kut teh you can find in Malaysia is a herbal pork broth, they vary from lighter to darker color of herbal broth that might emphasize the herbal or pork flavor depend on the region you go to

Old Dates all the way back to 1966! Aaaghhh! That's when my wife and I got married!
But thanks for yet another excellent video, Mark! At 82, this may be the only way I'll ever get to see it. Bless you and your family for what you do!

So Mark. Most agriculture/food system based podcasts often prioritize leaders of random food companies and nonprofit organizations instead of small-scale farmers, fisherman and frontline workers. What's your opinion on that

Hi Mark,
Love your videos, the format, the leisure, all of it. Don't change anything. As an expat living on Pulau Penang for the last 9 years just wondering if you are still here and doing more videos Cheers

Hey Mark, what happens to the remaining food at your meals I am sure at time Ying and yourself aren't able to finish everything that you have ordered, specially in cases like the meal at Ikan Bakar Din.
reply

Sorry, but that grill looks dirty! All dishes are open so everyone can touch them or they will cough into them! No thank you. Personally, I wouldn't want to eat there because hygiene is my priority.

Wow $1. 27 how do they make money In Canada you pay about $20-30 for a meal. Btw Mark my late husband was 100% German, i miss him so much. I have watched every single episode you have published.

Spicy noodles for breakfast I mean. It looks good and everything but more like a lunch or dinner meal. But that's just the Canadian talking to me who likes my bacon and eggs LOL
reply

It makes me both sad and angry whenever I watch videos from south east Asia and people are still wearing masks.
I guess they are just gone, indoctrinated with fake science for life huh

reply

Man, you hotta to have a real strong belly tolerance to keep that heavy food down, while it’s been sitting in that open sun and air I tell ya! I’m sure it’s delicious though.
