5 Must Eat Foods in Auckland: SUBSCRIBE for more: T-shirts: Today we are learning about the most traditional and greatest of all foods of Aotearoa (New Zealand, a Mori hangi, which is an underground oven that’s been used in New Zealand for over 1000 years. We’re meeting up with Rewi, better known as the Hangi Master ( , who has dedicated his life to perfecting hangi cooking, and preserving his Mori cultural heritage. Again, in the words of Rewi, you haven’t been to Aotearoa until you’ve eaten indigenous food, and I agree. There’s nothing better than a hangi in New Zealand! First, we went to harvest some local herbs and plants from the forest - both for cooking and for flavoring. On the menu we had chicken, lamb, pork, and mutton birds - a unique delicacy. What I loved is that Rewi seasoned everything the Mori way, using saltwater to soak the meats, and seasoning with a spicy leaf and seaweed. The hangi cooked for just about an hour and a half, and in the meantime, we devoured a fish cooked in the coals. The basket of food came out smoldering hot, everything cooked until fall apart tender. The flavors were smokey and steamed all at the same time. And I loved how everything retained its flavor without getting dried out. The food was amazing, and the hospitality of Rewi and his knowledge of Mori food and ingredients was a highlight. Thanks to Rewi, Hangi Master: Christian Kasper Follow on

This is the first time I have ever seen someone actually put herbs and spices into a hangi. I always wondered why hangis never have herbs and spices. Everything tastes like boiled cabbage and bland. This guy is a genius and has his own website, food truck and does catering. LOL! He should do weddings and have on site hangis. This would make serious money. I paid almost $2000 for the catering at my wedding and the food was. not as good as I could have cooked myself. I would hire a guy like this to come over for parties and events. He needs to do on site hangis and not just from his very cool home system.

Traditional maori chicken, Traditional maori pork, Traditional maori mixed vegetables, Traditional maori salt and pepper. Traditional everything! Year right! What a joke. Go did a hole in the ground with a stick and place some sweet potato (from Peru) and do what you traditionally use to do - throw a slave in for the meat. FAKE BS!

This food looks amazing but straight up wish you could come to a 21st or a wedding and have the whole experience!
Maybe even go for a dive with the boys. Have raw fish, seafood chowder, fry bread, chop suey alllll of that! Do it all bro. So happy you finally came to NZ tho, and so cool to see your son get in there with the men!

I remembered counting down with my wife when you reached 1 million subs years ago. We are from Auckland and every time we go overseas we also try to go to all the places that you’ve been to. Welcome to our beautiful country Mark. Wish we could run into you while you’re here. All the best!

The hangi is by far the most amazing food on the planet
They dont really do it down south, but where I come from in Hawkes Bay it was the go to meal for large gatherings & special occasions. Its one thing i really miss about HB, that and the fruit!

If you ever get a chance you should go to Fiji and try a Lovo, similar cooking method but with slight differences in approach. All the food is wrapped in banana leaves while cooking, there are lots of things like Plantain, Taro, Cassava, etc.

Hey Mark you should try the Otara Street Markets in Otara, South Auckland, for some authentic Polynesian foods (Samoan Tongan Cooks) on a Saturday morning.
We were there last year while on vacation visiting family.

Kia ora Mark. I watched most of your episodes and wondered if you will ever travel to Aotearoa/NZ. I am glad you visited and tried our traditional kai. Micah is adorable and has grown fast, hardly seen him on your other videos.

Hangi is the most bland boring food around the world, and I live here. It's just no. Rather eat dirt in Africa. As for as good as food gets in nz thats just not true. It's also called New Zealand, not Aotearoa

I had a hangi when I was a kid as my aunt who sadly passed away early married a maori and it was honestly one of the best meals I've ever eaten. It's crazy I can still remember the taste 30 years later.

I've been a follower from way back even before Micah was born, so it's so cool to finally see Mark visit New Zealand and watch Micah(who's grown so much) helping. Much Aroha Mark & family

Privileged to watch traditional Maori cooking using mostly natural ingredients which has become very rare food pleasures today The Hangi Master is also a humble and geniune person.
