It just doesn't do them justice without poi, but a lot of locals don't eat poi. I'm part Hawaiian so I am used to poi, but a lot of my classmates (mostly Chinese and Japanese) don't eat poi. Once I invited my Japanese friends to my family luau and was horrified when they mixed sugar and cream with poi. It's like not taking your coffee black, all the flavor is gone.

Hi Mark, I just got back from Honolulu and I made it a point to go to People's Cafe after watching this video. The staff remembered you, and were SO kind to us. I also had the Hawaiian plate (they had poi when I went. It was marvelous. Simply perfect food, and a great experience. My favorite was the laulau. Mahalo

Mark that taro leaves is similar to Filipino dish called LAING, usually cooked with either pork or dried fish. It's best cooked and prepared in the Bicol region in the Philippines. I had a friend whose mom was from Bicol and made and cooked the BEST LAING which I remember was really soooo very good. ;o)

I didn't realize you had ties in Hawaii. I'm from Hawaii too. Love to travel around southeast Asia. More specifically the area of Thailand. Great cuisine and the people are friendly. Love watching your reviews on different eateries around Asia. Keep up the good work Mark. Aloha

Aloha from Maui, Mark Love your grandma, she's so chill, lol. If you ever do an episode on Maui, you have to stop in at our favorite local diner, Tasty Crust, in Wailuku. They've been around since the 1940's and super ono grinds
