Xoi Man (Sticky Rice and Toppings) in Saigon, Vietnam Jennifer J.: That looks delicious The baloney lucheon meat stuff is call gio (with a downward inflection. It's a compressed pork product, kind of like spam. It's used as luncheon meat, but it's also good cut into squares and sauteed with onions. That's for a dish meant for rice. Might be able to check that out at a binh dan (commoner's food? not sure about the translation) restaurant, Mark. Thanks for showing us all these goodies

btw that meat that Mark calls luncheon meat is actually way better than luncheon meat. When I hear luncheon I think of something low-quality, possibly from a can or a plastic packaging. But this thing is cha lua or gio lua which is pork that has been pounded into a paste and seasoned, and then wrapped in banana leaves and steamed. The lua in cha lua means silk, and from what I remember that's because it is supposed to be made of lean pork, so that the pork paste is very smooth, resulting in delicious cha lua: )

Only one piece of Chinese sausage? Dude. you got ripped off LOL The sausage, in my opinion, is the best part Xoi Man is a typical breakfast dish, especially in the South, and the toppings vary depending on what you have on hand and what you like Never had it with the pate, though. Thanks for posting this, you brought back memories

Love it. My mom made it the other day and it was bomb. There used to be a place near Bac si Thien (aka Dr. Thien) but they moved or stopped selling. They used to had the best xoi man. But my mom came close to it. Lol

Just read the description, for a second I thought you went to Vietnam again: ) Xoi man is popular dish in Vietnam. I went back this past summer and made it myself because I don't trust street stalls.

Never was my favorite but a lot of people i know love it. I miss Mi Bo Kho in Saigon. Only place i know that has the sweeter version. Haven't found a place here in the states that does it. Booo.

I'm sure this has been asked before, but, forgive my ignorance: Why are those motorcycle/scooter things so prevalent in Saigon and Vietnam in general?
