Today we re going on a Gullah Geechee and Soul Food tour in Charleston, South Carolina. I ll be trying some of the classic dishes like Turkey wings, red rice, crab and rice, and not missing out on the mountain of garlic butter crabs! Bertha's Kitchen This was one of the restaurants I was most looking forward to trying when I was in Charleston - so try their traditional Soul food and Gullah food. They ve even won a James Beard award! Their red rice, fried catfish, and especially their giant turkey wing was the highlight. Excellent food, highly recommended when you re in Charleston. Hannibal's Kitchen Next we headed to Hannibal's Kitchen, again a restaurant that legendary for their Gullah food in Charleston. They have all sorts of southern specialties here including crab rice and lima beans with pig tails. Ravenel Fresh Seafood Big thank you to Chef BJ Dennis for this recommendation. Ravenel Fresh Seafood serves local South Carolina seafood, prepared Gullah style. You can t go wrong with the red rice and fried fish, but people most come here for the mountain of crabs with thick garlic butter sauce all over it.

I ve watched Mark s videos for a long, long time and it seems to me that when he s in the United States, the hospitality they show Mark is just lame. Other countries like for example, his Saudi Arabia tour and Iran, they were so hospitable they treated Mark like royalty. By the way, I live in the US. Those ladies at Bertha s Kitchen in Charleston didn t even seem interested he was there.

The best blue crabs are Maryland Choptank River Blue Crabs. I just had a few dozen yesterday with Chincoteague, Island, Virginia raw oysters in Ocean City Maryland that where very good. I normally have a friend that crabs and steams Choptank crabs for friends and family that are unbelievably delicious but sometimes you need some crabs and you try a restaurant here and there

Yeah that's disappointing to me - i want my crab/lobster to be served warm at a minimum. My family is from the Carolinas and was interested to see where this place was and possibly try it next visit but i'll have to pass unless they'll serve the garlic crab to order and not just cold.

Mark, thank you for showcasing the awesome food we have in South Carolina. Especially, the Low Country and bringing awareness to the Gullah Geechee food culture. It's nothing like it in the entire country and I could tell that you enjoyed every bite of it. You'll be back!

I didn t see your family eat what they have to wait until you finish blogging, other Bolger family eat right alone with them and enjoy the food when it is hot your wife and son have been on many trips with you and they are still not shown enjoying the food with you.

As much as I like Mark's vids, after 8-9 yrs of doing this we all know that huge Mmmmm is an act and put-on, lolol. Cmon Mark, we need real opinions not just to satisfy the PR aspect. Maybe a separate vid where you don't mention the business names. lol.

My mother was from South Carolina and everything you re eating was a part of my childhood. Red rice and the okra and tomatoes I really thought my mother made those up because none of my friends ate them. I miss my mother.

Thanks for the visit and video Mark. We here in the lowcountry enjoyed to see you and your family. So overall how was your visit? I think you may have left with high blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes. lol.

I m curious to know what do you do with all the food when your finished, surely you don t consume it all. You must donate it? But who s gonna eat it after it s been played over.

Just wanna know how your body can ingest so much food at 1 time. Love your shows I have learned to cook many dishes by watching your show. Can you do for Atlanta GA

Remind me to NOT visit a place like Hannibal's, where they are so QUANG, they wouldn't go out of there way to seat Mark and his family nor be on camera.

All of the food looks mouth watering! I'm travelling to America this year for the first time and noting these places on my bucket list
reply

You're going to need to step it up, Mark. Watching people eating in new and interesting cultures demands more culture, less eating.

Can someone tell if he has EVER tasted and/or said that something was nasty? I m starting to think that he doesn t keep it REAL!
reply

So shame that the dishes that the US exported are mostly crap, and the best American food is almost unknown in the rest of the world
reply

Thanks, Mark! However, I noticed that you're taking your food outside? are there any issues inside? Just asking though.
