Today we re visiting St. Helena in South Carolina, an island that s preserved much of its Gullah Geechee and Lowcountry heritage, culture and food. We have the honor of meeting up with Tony and Belinda Jones from Morning Glory Homestead - to learn about Gullah Geechee history and cook a full farm to table southern USA, lowcountry meal. On the menu is one of the greatest dishes of all time, shrimp and okra, with local grits, rice, and fried whiting fish. We picked our own okra from the farm, and cooked everything fresh Gullah Geechee style under the sweeping live oak trees. Thank you again to Tony and Belinda Jones from Morning Glory Homestead - for hosting me for this incredible Gullah Geechee food and cultural experience in South Carolina. Ruthanne: Mark always does his homework about a native cuisine and treats the people preparing the food with respect What I like too is he doesn't pretend the facts of history doesn't exist or diminish the courage and efforts of the people to survive such a history

Okra is a superfood in its own respect. in some African countries they claim that drinking okra leaf soup improves fertility in women and there is a place which has a record number of twins and they too claim Okra to be the reason for it. some use okra slime as hair conditioner and a lot of countries consume Okra for its health benefits, especially for the grease between your bones.

Enjoyed seeing Ying enjoy the food with you and your interactions Tony and Belinda was wondering and I love how Tony scolded you cleaning the shrimp, that man is passionate about what he does and it show in his the quality of his life work.

Well the morning glory plant is not wild anymore! There are plants being sold! There are seeds too! How fitting that the plant has come into its own! Have you ever ver seen a morning glowing ray vine all over a French in full bloom? Absolutely beautiful!

I'm so glad you finally did South Carolina, was wondering why you hadn't went there yet. I'm heading down from NY later this year and can't wait to try out some of these places. Greatly appreciated, thank you Mark!

Hey Mark, would love to see some fresh content! Feel's like you've shrimp/grits/country food a fair few times and it would be great to see something a little left field. Love your work.

The vein as you call it down the back of a shrimp is the gastro intestinal tract or GI tract. You remove it because the fresher shrimp sometimes still have food wastes (poop) in it.

most of the west africans did not eat pork, but generally speaking the basic ingredients and methods of cooking have been preserved especially in the rice dishes
