I've been eating at Marie's since the mid-80's and it was my Dad's high school hangout in the early 50's. Back then at Marie's if you ordered a sausage pizza, you'd get a pepperoni pizza with no cheese! You had to say cheese as a topping or you got none, and you had to say Italian sausage or you got pepperoni. Marie's is a perfect example of how to enjoy a tavern cut style Chicago pizza. The outside edge pieces have the crunch of the crust while the middle pieces collect all the oil from the cheese (and more flavor. Do not use napkins to blot the oil! It's so flavorful. I lovingly call the middle pieces the pizza truffles (like a chocolate truffle. Chicago is a sausage town (the rest of America loves pepperoni but that's because sausage around the country isn't as good) and our pizzas typically have wonderful bulk sausage with plenty of fennel seed flavor. Marie's sausage is awesome and is THE topping to have when in a Chicago pizzeria. Nothing like a night at Marie's in December with the snow falling down outside. Thank you Nadine for keeping this landmark open for us!

This neighborhood is pretty tight. They have a ceremony every year for Veterans Day at the memorial at Keeler and Lawrence, and after that's all done we would all go to Marie's and be served free pizza's and drinks. I haven't seen other neighborhoods do something like this, so to me this is a rare and great thing.

growing up, Marie's was my dad's favorite. eating there was like taking a pilgrimage. later i would fly in to visit and order 2-3 pizzas to take on the plane. after they cooled, the little squares broke down nicely into a bag or two. i'd heat them up as soon as i got home.

Duuuuuude that's around my old hood. (I'm from Humboldt park but at one point moved to Mayfair) I used to hit that liquor store up all the time. That's on Lawrence. not too far from the library. Awesome place!
