Harvesting Garlic Garden Answer kowdah1: Hi Laura! I so love your videos! I live in the Northeast, and up here we can only grow the hard neck varieties. (Zone 5 like you, but I guess the climate is different) The one thing we do differently is harvest the scapes as soon as they come up. (around the 4th of July) The idea being that taking away the flower scape causes the plant to put it's energy into the head, rather than the flower, so the head can grow larger. The scapes are still perfect for cooking and pickling.

Some say you are supposed to wait to harvest your hard neck varieties until you've finished enjoying harvesting the scapes usually about a month before harvesting the bulbs. Or if you have left the scapes on, the scapes will let you know by turning upwards and pointing straight up towards the sky. So you probably could have left your hardnecks in a while longer until the scapes had straightened out.

Hi Laura, I planted some garlic this past fall and its been around 8 months, for some reason the stalks from the garlic are falling over. I was wondering why this is happening? I would appreciate your opinion on this. Thank you for your wonderful videos they truly explain things so clearly and are entertaining to watch too.

I'm learning so much from your videos Laura. I have a question, how do you keep your gravel areas free of weeds? I tried many things including vinegar, salt, and even poison. In the large areas it's impossible to keep up by just pulling weeds out? Yours look so clean! What's your secret?

I have heard that you should harvest the scapes as soon as they appear and just curl over, not later than that. And the garlic needs up to a few more weeks after removing the scapes to mature in the ground before pulling. So, what is the right way to do this?

I've deliberately held off on watching this so that I could watch the process happen all together. I am so excited to see it all come together. I love how easy to follow your tips are Laura. Thank you so much.

my garlic did nothing i planted them between flowers they wernt even cloves of garlic your garlic looks so good and the garlic scapes are expensive to purchase if you can find them

I don't see any comments about watering the garlic after planting. I'm in a zone 7 so I assume the snow takes care of that, but during the spring is there a schedule for watering

hmmmn, after picking the scapes you should let garlic continue to grow until bottom 3 or 4 leaves are brown and dried. also the scapes should be/ can be picked much longer
