Harvesting Potatoes Garden Answer Bruce: My uncle used old 6ft. tractor tires with side walls cut off. Lay them down in the fall where he was going to grow potatoes. Put 12 inches of leaves, in spring add 4 inches straw packed down. Spread the potatoes on straw and cover with 6 inches loose straw. When the tops grow through the straw add more straw. Until stack is about 18 inches tall. In the fall with the roots in the straw you grab a plant and lift it a foot remove some potatoes' and set it back down to grow a while longer. would work with your boxes also.

Thank You! Thank You! You really are filled with so much great information; and you share it so freely! I love that you show complete seasonal cycles. This was a perfect follow up video! I commented on your potato planting episode, earlier in the current planting season, with questions about quantities produced from each potato start but didnt see a response. Im so glad I happened across these 3 year old planting/harvesting videos. Im ready for next year!

VERY helpful! Ive always heard to cut up a potato to plant it, but no one seems to talk about what happens next. I didnt know it can grow so many new ones! I always thought, why go to the trouble if youre just replacing what you had? Im in Utah, so it would probably cost me more to grow them than to just buy them. But you make it look so fun, I might just have to try planting potatoes this year.

I love that cat! I usually harvest mine after they have gone yellow, but depending on the variety, that extra time can thicken the skin, or allow any scabbing to worsen. I grow the same varieties every year, so I've learned to gauge the timing. Once you learn the best timing for the varieties you are growing, you can hit that sweet spot every year. Great vid!

When you harvest your potatoes if some of them have a greenish color on some of the skin are they still okay to use? I heard that if they are green they can make you sick if you eat them? The skin is normal looking on most of it and not soft like the one you rubbed. I harvested them about 2 weeks ago. Thank you for any help you can give me.

3 years to late to comment on this video, but anyways, THANK YOU VERY MUCH! I learnt a lot!
If you replant the plants without the tubers, would they reproduce again around the same amount of potatoes after 100 days?
And could you use the potato seeds from the flowers for the next years plants?

Hi Laura, I don't know if you or anyone else is going to see this because of how old the video is, but can you or someone else give me tips on the most productive potato variety? I'm planning on going to my first farmers market next year & I'm a home gardener

Hi Laura. Really liked your video on growing potatoes. Can we grow potatoes in September in growing bags? Also can we use potatoes with no sprouts to plant or should we use potato seeds. Thank you
