Landscape Makeover Part 6: Placing Rocks! Garden Answer Polli: We have 8-10 (3'x2-3')rocks in our landscape and I'm so glad we bought them. One thing to note is over time they settle and kind of sink into the soil. Since then I have noticed that landscape companies put gravel where the boulders will go and compact it with a tamper then add the rocks. I would recommend that or place them on undisturbed soil. (we removed a lot of clay soil and added a truck load of good soil for our planting beds, then added rocks.

Love everything you do, but this yard is so small and is now encircled with plants somewhat lined up along the exterior of the yard. The rocks just don't look natural at all. I'm accustomed to groupings in odd numbers, 3, 5, 7, etc. The plants are lined up without continuity and the rocks just don't do it for me. You all seem very happy with it and if the homeowner likes it, that's really all that matters. Wish I could love it: )

I love the volcanic rocks that I have in my garden. They are much lighter and their porous nature seems to make the moss on them really thrive. Also, you can carve them. I packed my trunk full when I was visiting family in Oklahomahard to find them in Georgia. My uncle in Oklahoma liked to carve them into planters. My plan had been to carve faces into them, but they are so beautiful as is that I never have.

I know this response is a year later than when you originally filmed this video (I'm binge watching in July 2020-lol) but I really like the boulders you placed in areas of the flower bed along the sidewalk especially since the home looks like it is on a busy street. I think the boulders give a sort of boundary along the perimeter. I don't know if I am explaining this correctly but the yard looks fabulous!

I made a rock garden in my driveway just this weekend and paid 200 EUR for my rocks. And we picked them up from the seller ourselves so no transportation costs in that price. I also find it mind boggling that you have to pay for a rock so much but in such a small and densely populated country as Belgium you can't just go out in nature and gather your own rocks.

One hint I learned from a professional landscape architect is to dig in the rocks. If you look in nature the rocks or boulders don't look like they are sitting ON the dirt but are IN the dirt. Dig a relief area, set the rock in and fill around the sides so you don't see the bottom. Just a thought. The yard is looking great.

Love the rocks and especially the different colours of lichen. Rocks are art in my mind. I have put beautiful field stones both front and back at my home--they're from my grandfather's farm. I don't sink them in any more because I find they will naturally sink on their own and when I would sink them, they'd then sink even more.

Oh my gosh Laura> You did a great job! Now I am into rocks! We get a lot of them here in Northern Idaho. We just dig them up and put out in back in a pile. When we redid the grass in the very front I said to the Contractor I am into rocks. My vision was to place a giant boulder between two PineTrees. It really made a difference!

Wow so beautiful, I was wondering how this landscape was fairing, I'm glad you gave us an update with the rocks you placed I think you picked some great ones, everything is filling in so good and it is all looking really nice. Thank you Laura and Aaron, it was also fun to see a little bit of Benjamin, he is such a cutie.

The rocks are great, but i think they need to buried a little bit, like they are being pushed up out of the earth, like in nature, no rock is just sitting there on top of the dirt. putting them in the dirt will make it look more natural, like they are part of the landscape and not just placed there, which is how it looks
