Planting Blackberries! Garden Answer Nicolas: I have a high pH, about 8. 2, and I can grow most of the stuff that I want. No rhododendrons or blueberries, for sure, but raspberries and blackberries are fine if you put enough organic matter in. In my case, a lot of wood chips. Humus has a pH of 6. 5, so if you build up your humus layer, you lower your pH. That's why you should put wood chips on absolutely everything in your garden if you can. Regarding plants that like high pH, there is a great book in french about those plants, and you can find a LOT of stuff. In my case, it's alkaline clay, so it's not as easy as the usual alkaline soils, which are poor and rocky. In my case, it's hard, waterlogged, full of quack grass. But some plants do great. Regarding veggies, cabbages and artichokes love an alkaline soil. For cabbages, it's because they can get phosphorous easily with their tap root, whereas alkaline soils have a phosphorous blockage usually due to the high pH. Sunflowers have the same ability. I grow all types of perennials: echinops, eryngium, grasses, centaureas, poppies, snapdragons, etc. For shrubs and trees, elder trees do great, forsythias, oaks, hazelnut trees, willows. Mostly the things I can't grow are from countries where there aren't alkaline soils, and mostly that is Japan and Australia. Some eucalypts do fine, but forget about wattles, callistemons, grevilleas, banksias, leptosmermums (tea trees) etc. And Japanese maples are a big no. It's sad for me coz I lived in Australia for a few years and fell in love with the flora, but those plants wouldn't be at home there, the Parisian climate doesn't suit them.

I would recommend trying black raspberries in the future, also. Our property came with a bed of black raspberries. They make the most flavorful jelly. They do need to grow a distance away from raspberries, because they are prone to have some disease the wouldnt be good for raspberries. Its been 7 yrs and so far I havent seen it. (Zone 4A here) Im in Wisconsin, not quite at the planting stage but can get out to down my raspberry canes and prune grape vines. So ready to see GREEN again. Thank you and Aaron for all the inspiration that gets us through late winter months. But I would trade the 4 seasons for anything else. Julie

We actually had the same eggs on rose bush branches, on our crape myrtle tree and you would NOT believe this, but also on our antenna on our car! I kid you Not! I thought at first they were some sort of spying mechanism, hey cut me some slack here, on a car antenna lmaooooo! On a side note, Ive been growing blackberries in a container for 3 years now, I get blackberries every season, the canes, I call stems, branches lol, the leaves are all sprouting out, some blackberries last season were very small, some huge, (Im not sure what type they are) Im in the desert southwest a low of 30 tonight with a high of 64 tomorrow.

Have you tried Polka Raspberries? Far superior to Heritage in flavor and crop bounty. They are primocane fruiting like Heritage. In spring of 2020 I planted a row of Polka and a row of Heritage. There was no comparison. Polkas deep, rich, sweet raspberry flavor must be tasted to be believed. Last year I ripped out the heritage and just a few weeks ago planted a second row of Polka. If I had never tasted Polka I would not have know what I was missing. Like you I left half of the row with thinned canes, the rest of the row I sheared off.

I like this video! It was a whole buffet of Garden Answer! A little bit of harvest, a little of sweet baby girl, some biology mystery, the family and garden center, and planting with some tips. Not to mention, I love longer videos! It really made my Saturday morning tea time! I would love if every Friday video were like this one to hold me over until the Highlights on Sunday. I love you guys! I might come all the way from Spain and fangirl you one of these days! May God continue to bless you! Hugs, Brittany

Hi Laura! Have you ever had any bug issues with your raspberries and/or blackberries? Last year I noticed some tiny (like microscopic) white worm like bugs inside of both my raspberries and blackberries. I couldn't figure out what they were, and I was so worried about my kids eating them (they usually just pick the berries right off the plant and eat them) that I ended up tossing tons of berries out. Any help on this problem would be much appreciated! Thank you!

Lovin your raised beds for the berries. You guys put a lot of thought into your beds and I know youll have a bumper crop of blackberries next year. We planted 3 little thornless blackberry plants on our very small subdivision lot 2 years ago and this past year our vines were loaded with very large sweet berries and they just kept on producing berries all summer. The plants were nothing special, got them from WalMart. Only wish I had enough room for more.

It is so nice to see some spring gardening happening as here is South Africa we are going into autumn. On that note we would be around a zone 10 and I was wondering if it would be ok to cut my red hot poker plants as they are just looking scruffy? I have researched it and I get confused as some say no some say yes. Once again thank you for the fantastic videos.

Curious to know how much dirt you (both) drag into the house/find inside your shoes every day as you open raised bed mix soil right over your Vans Do you use a robot vacuum cleaner in addition to your regular cleaning schedule to keep up with garden debris inside the house and do you find that helpful?
