What Size Auger Do You Need for Planting? Garden Answer Gina: This is a brilliant, brilliant video - thank you! Absolutely on point, with lots of explanations and examples with a variety of augers and excellent warning to watch out for 'drill flip' (I don't have a second handle for my drill so I'll be careful. I bought my cordless drill and augers on the back of your video! I have 100 various bulbs to plant into heavy London clay. I had previously tried to hand-dig bulb holes in my soil and could only get max 5 inches/12cm down which took ages too and wore me out as soil too compacted (especially near tree stumps/roots, so I bought a traditional bulb-planter but that only penetrated soil to 2 (despite TWO MONTHS of non-stop rain which I thought would make the soil easier to dig but it just clagged up the clay even more. Off to garden now whilst there's a brief break in the rain to give it a go and hoping for a pleasant afternoon - will try not to get carried away and drill for England!

I cant thank you enough. I never knew of augers until now. It has changed my life. I do our garden and flower bed (for the wifey as she loves this stuff and i love seeing her happy. However with injuries and previous surgeries from my time in the army doing it by hand and the ups and down would kill me. I literally would be bed ridden for a few days. After finding your videos (which i love) it change my whole approach and tools used. So thank you, my back, and the rest of me thanks you. :) hope you and the hubby have a wonderful day.

I REALLY appreciate all this detailed info on augers and also on drills, drill settings and that drill side handle. I was a little stumped as to how strong / powerful my drill needs to be to use a 5 or 7 wide auger in fairly rocky soil. I think your bigger drill later in the video was 60V so I went with 60V but in a different drill shape so I can use it for regular home drilling projects too. It's not cheap but this way I don't have to pay someone to dig & put in plants for me!

Thank you Laura. We have a long tradition of planting tulips in our family and I have always used the trench method. Let's just say that I'm usually sore for days after our annual planting. I found your tulip planting video earlier this year after the shut down. Now, with this additional info, I was able to purchase and test out the 2 and 3 in augers that you recommended. Let's just say this year's planting will be very different. So great! Many thanks!

You are more informative than a Home Depot or Lowes representative! I loved your video. I'm building a covered garden in the back yard and the auger drill bits will definitely be helpful. I want to plant flowering bushes in the front yard as well. You have been very helpful. Your property looks great. Thanks!

Glad you mentioned the point of the costly augers and that gear reduction drill may not make sense for some people. Last summer I picked up a small augur for tree spikes or to pour granular down the hole and pack it with black kow manure. Recently planted fifteen fruit trees and four grape vines.

Thank you for demonstrating how to use garden auger bits. I fed two magnolia trees today in a matter of minutes thanks to you. I bought a drill with a handle as you suggested. Im so glad that I did because my wrist would have been toast were it not for the drill handle. Your videos are so helpful.

I had over 7, 000 plants that needed to be planted on my steep hillside. I'm so happy I found your video! After watching, I immediately ordered the DeWalt Power Drill and the 3 long auger. Thanks for providing the link! You saved the day! Now I have 650 daffodil bulbs to plant - I feel lucky!

Hi Laura, thank you for the great idea about using bulb auger tool. I just purchased DEWALT 1/2-in 20-Volt Max Variable Speed Brushless Cordless Hammer Drill. I just wondering what size of Bulb auger i have to use. I am confused which size I have to get that would fit in my drill. Thanks!

Waiting for my eBay special auger, which is a 9 inch variety, which will be used to plant creeping thyme around the rocks and cobbles of my drought tolerant landscape. For creeping thyme, does anyone know the recommended depth? The width of the boring blades is only 2 inches. Thanks.
