Pruning & Fertilizing My Hydrangeas! Garden Answer Aggie: I have a trio of lace cap bushes in front of my porch that are as old as I am (bought house in 2017) In Sept. 2017 leaves were yellowing, setting flowers every year but looking spent after they bloomed. I amended soil, put mulch down, fixed irrigation system in the yard. I spent the winter researching lacecaps and in 2018 the bush set new buds. I left the unruly bushes alone, and learned that in my Coastal southeast area I could deadhead and lightly cut back dead spindly and/or unhealthy branches after they bloom which is late June/early July here. Since 2019 they have come to life every year, its 2021 and I just finished deadheading the old blooms. I now have a classic southern porch with old school, 3 bushes with blue and white blooms and yes, if you dont know anything about them let them go through a season, die back and trim lightly and care. Then after a year and a half they should show their growth and true health!

Thank you for this video! I do have a couple questions that I hope you're able to answer for me. I had a landscaper install a bunch of plants for me with several hydrangeas (love them. When you are putting down the fertilizer, it looks like you have mulch down & are just scratching the fertilizer under the mulch. Is that the case, just to make sure the fertilizer doesn't wash away until it's watered in? I'm always worried about running into roots with a shovel & can't scratch my soil (I've hit some roots like this before. Under the mulch would be great? Thank you!

I have one really old hydrangea that I've had for 39 years and it blooms every single year. Usually it blooms in the spring. This year it bloomed in the spring and throughout the summer and still has blooms on it coming through now. It has been an unusually warm fall. I just bought a hydrangea tardiva and and putting it in the ground for the winter I hope it makes it through our Massachusetts Winters.

I've had my hydrangeas for about 7 yrs. First 3 yrs. no blooms at all, 4th yr. 2 to 3 blooms, 5th yr. 4 blooms and this year 5 to 6 huge blooms biggest ever. What I did differently last year was cut back a little more than year before because first 4 yrs. I wasn't aware to cut back. This year after cutting back I will use Hollytone now that I'm aware. Thanks.

I have a hubbie that cuts our hydrangas so back that we get few blooms. It's endless summer brand. Can you identify the variety (is it new wood or dead wood that it blooms on. Either way I'm just stumped On yours in the video - where did all the leaves go? Do you cut them off or do they just fall off? Sorry. I have 22 hydrangas and he cuts them all the same.

I accidentally cut my paniculata down to the base yesterday (wasn't paying attention. I tried to stick the cuttings back in the ground to hopefully root them there but did I just set myself back a few years of growth? Do you think any of the branches will actually root? Kicking myself so hard.

Oh no! What if u remove the new blooms? I removed a third of the new blooms b4 I realized that they were green n new and growing (bought them last fall n it's my first year so I had no clue. Will those stems create new branches with new blooms or what?

Beautiful gardens! Thanks for the hydrangea info. I have several, a couple oak leaf, a few Lady in Red, and some that are just big old unidentified hydrangesas. I love that you include Russel. I love cats - they are as peaceful as a garden!
