Planting Spring Crops! Garden Answer Alyssa: Hey Laura, i love your energy with getting started, but I have a couple questions. I live in Ontario, Canada and our climate is still into freezing temps overnight and thru much of the days so we wont be planting outside yet, but as we are really starting to make our backyard our own and putting our choice of plants in the gardens i have been wondering if its a good idea to put in irrigation for a rainy and often humid climate? I have littles so it is hard to be consistent with watering but the rain usually does a good enough job at keeping the soil moist but I havent gotten great yield foodwise. Last year was the first year i really used fertilizer (slow release once and weekly quick release) but Im not sure it helped all that much. Sorry for the long comment but i thought i might ask.

I am very intrigued by lettuce and cabbage. I always saw my uncle's garden flourish with tomatoes and squash. But I dont have any experience with the leafy green vegetable plants. I did some cabbage last year, and the bugs ate it up! But I never really knew what to do with it much. I just sprayed and watered and hoped for the best. If you could show an amateur more about those types of plants, that would be great. Thank you so much for your videos! You are clearly book smart and have also done the work. I'm learning so much!

When I was a kid we lived in Ontario for 3 years, it was a great place to grow up.
We later moved to Bend which at the time was about twice as big as Ontario.
I remember the Snake river froze over one winter, fishing at Owyhee reservoir was good and there were plenty of pheasants and chukar for the grownups to hunt while I tagged along.
Whenever I drive back to Oregon I always like to spend a little extra time there and in Vale where my first love grew up.
I hear they grow a billion onions in that region. :-)

This week I started seedling pakchoy, kale, spinach, peas, eggplant, corn, bittermelon, pumpkin, cucumber, tomato, pepper, chilli, lettuce, onion, spring onion, okra. And more to come for next week. I live in tropics, and the hard rainy season almost over, move to normal rain, so perfect to plant veggies without worry it will rot from extensive rain. I still have some veggies I harvest time to time, but not much.
I try to do social distancing, but not so my neighbors.

Raining here in Kentucky so gardening is on hold for now, but your joyful attitude is so uplifting and makes me smile. I especially love when Russell photo bombs you. You are the only person I know who can get so excited about a bag of plant seeds. Your family is a joy to watch. What do you do with all the veggies you grow? I'm seeing an offshoot called Garden Answer Farm series. Take care of yourself and your people.

Hi Laura, Im planning my vegetable garden we dont have a lot of space to carve a large designated space. We have a large three tiered garden on the side of the house that would be a good place to add shade tolerant vegetables. It is fairly shaded most the day, and get most its sun in the morning. What vegetables could I plant in that area? It currently is full Hostas, Huechera, Ferns and a bleeding heart.

I have a little vegetable container garden on my patio. Do I have to completely empty out the soil in my containers every single year and replace it with new soil or could I just keep the old soil and just add something like biotone to the soil before replanting my next season of vegetables? Also, if I can keep the old soil how do I preserve it in the container throughout the winter?

Yes! Seed starting time! I have 2 questions for you. 1. I thought this area was going to be dedicated to your cut flower garden? (Which I am so excited to see because Im doing the same this year) 2. Is it safe to use garden tone/bio tone with seeds and small starts? Im always afraid of burning the little seedlings. Thanks for all you do to help us in the garden & landscaping!

How lucky and refreshing! Distancing from pretty much everyone and still soooo snowy outside up in Canada! Setting up maple syrup lines though! yum yum === Not setting foot in any stores: ( a couple gardening questions as always! - do you worry about companion planting at all? What are those wicker like cloches used for? One more- do you do anything to warm up your soil?

We need to add a retaining wall to the northeast side of our house. Since this will basically give me a 40' long raised bed, I wanted to make it into a vegetable/fruit garden. Are there any food-producing plants that do well in northeast facing gardens that get only a few hours of sun? Keep in mind that I'm in Texas (zone 8b, so we get strong sun during those few hours.
