Cutting Back Lavender! Garden Answer Will: you really shouldn't ever fertilise lavender and you definitely should never irrigate it. it comes from very hot dry locations in the mediterranean basin and thrives in very poor, well drained soil with virtually no nutrients. Lavender will look its best and live for much longer if you replicate its growing conditions in the wild. you should never water lavender, it will survive of winter rains and will thrive in summer with no water at all, its very drought tolerant. if you water lavender, there is a big risk of introducing a disease known as phytophthora, which is caused by watering, especially in the summer. Plant it, water it in and leave it alone, all you should do is a hard prune around mid august and you'll have a nice much healthier plant for up to 15 years

Appreciate your videos, they are also a labour of love like your garden. I have a question: I live in the south western part of Canada and temperatures here have just started to warm up between 45 F and 60 F. I only planted my lavender last year but I did allow it to bloom. It is now mid April and I do see some fresh growth but I have no pruned. Would it be a good idea at this stage to prune as per your recommendations in this video? Thank you!

Laura, can you tell us what the scent of that particular lavender is like, please? I grow lavender more for the scent than the flowers but it's so nice when both are lovely. Thanks very much. This was, indeed, helpful.
Scratch Russell's sweet little forehead from me. We have one that looks just like him who had to have emergency surgery to correct a urinary blockage today. He's still at the vet and seeing Russell made me miss him. Lisa

I think I'm going to have to quit on my lavendar. My grandmother gave it to me and it's about 4 foot tall and looks very windswept. It turned brown after we planted it and is 90% woody. It does have new growth but all of its branches are going hoizontally to the right so it can't be reshaped. I'd hate to let it go but it just looks awful.

Bought my first lavender plant last yr and potted it. I loved. Going to try and get enough to plant along my fence. I got mine from Home Depot but do u think a nursery is better? Not sure how many nurseries are in my area and if they are open during the quarantine but I'll look it up. I'm also on a budget. Thanks and great video.

Thank you for this, I have a black thumb and got lavender specifically for its hardiness. Unfortunately I had no idea the first two years that I needed to cut it back so now its quite large and somewhat woody. I want to cut it back but not sure when to do it, should I wait until the end of August at this point?

Another great video as usual! As you just mentioned I moved into a house with a very overgrown 3 x 4 lavender growing slanted over as sidewalk by the front door. Can I move it successfully, divide it into clumps and create a hedge like yours? Zone 8, end of May right now. Looking for answers, thanks!

I've NEVER had luck with lavender. I think it's my watering. I come home and find my husband watering them. I have convinced him to leave them alone and let them dry =. I have all soil, no grave so I need to find spot to keep them happy. What are the best companion plants for Lavendar?

I just planted so much lavender, I think my neighbors on both sides will be offended. It's like the Mediterranean in my backyard. It's like Provence in my backyard. It's insane. (p. s. Grammarly helped me spell Mediterranean, and I get no kickback for the plug)
