First Containers of Spring! Garden Answer georl1: Hi Laura, Ive heard you say that you lived in USDA zone 5 on the cusp of zone 6 in the Northwest US. Well, like you, I live in zone 5 on the cusp of zone 6 in the Northeast US. Did you know that you can grow the Encore Azalea plant in your area of zone 5. I knew that these Azaleas were hardy only to zone 6 so in May of 2021, I decided to do a little experimenting so I bout two gorgeous plants and transplanted them in larger pots and left them out in front of the house. These Azaleas bloomed like a blooming machine all summer long so in August I planted one in front of the house as the front of the house faces South so its sunny all day long. After setting it in the ground, I wrapped a burlap cloth around the base of it then spread a think layer of mulch around it. When the real cold weather started in November, I put 4 stakes around the plant, then wrapped shipping bubble pack around it and used carton sealing tape to keep it in place. The air bubbles in the bubble pack and the burlap acts as a good insulation. Now that its Spring with temps in the 40s 50s and 60s I took the bubble pack off and I compared the plant to my regular Azaleas and the top part looks the same but the leaves in the middle and bottom part of the plant are nice and green which tells me that this beautiful Encore Azalea survived the winter and will bloom again this summer. I was thrilled to see this because now I plan to buy several more this year and plant them in the same area. The second Encore Azalea I left in the pot and took it inside the house all winter. I take it out daily now that the weather is warmer and it has already started to bloom again. I just thought you would be interested to know this.

Lovely! I do have a question for you: i have grasshoppers in my San Diego garden. I actually picked one off an avocado tree YESTERDAY (2-20-22. I used to use Semaspore or Nolo bait, and it worked pretty well. But last year no one made it! Do you know whether any company is going to manufacture it this year?
It has generally only been available for a short time beginning in March. I froze it to keep it fresh longer. But now am without anything effective and non-toxic to pollinators and people, except maybe attracting more birds - but that creates its own issues. To make matters worse, my yard backs up to an HOA maintained naturalized area and last year they ripped out all the weeds and many of the shrubs and replaced them with very small drought- tolerant species. I think all the grasshoppers from that area are now munching on my yard. If you have any industry information about when a Nosema locustae product like Nolo bait us going to be available again, I would very much appreciate it!

It was a good thing I decided to watch you last night. I picked up a few hellebores (my first ever) a couple of weeks ago at the garden center. They were outside on a table in sun and I asked them about that, they said some varieties were ok with a few hours of morning sun. I left mine in the can and set them up outside waiting for better weather to put them in the ground. This week, we got really cold with our lows in the mid twenties. I came home yesterday and one of them looked really droopy, but I left it out and came in. Dinner and part way through your show when I learned they should be inside until they acclimate to the temperature, I ran out in the middle of the night and gathered my frozen new plants. I set them on my seed shelf I just set up in the room and am hoping for the best. Thank you for your information and knowledge.

Yeah I just got my first Hellebore as a Christmas present, I think I killed it because I planted it out too soon. I was assured by the garden center it would do well and shortly after I noticed the stems where they meet the soil were rotting and falling off. I'm happy I ordered some seeds though and look forward to trying again. Thanks for these amazing videos!

Laura, Garden Answer is truly an inspiration. I am from India. I have always loved hanging container arrangements. But whenever I would do a maintenance on my hanging baskets there would always be frogs & I'm terrified of the creatures. Do u face similar issues or how do I deal with this. I am so terrified that I don't make hanging arrangements anymore!

So not really related to the video but you should get a few ducks to let roam around in the south garden! They dont destroy stuff like chickens and they eat bugs! Benjamin and Samantha Grace would love them! I know Erin from floret has them! Im going to get maybe 2 this year to let walk around my garden!

Can you do a video or chat on best way to clear out bed with overgrown weeds? I live in wooded area in midwest and have several areas where the weeds grow to a few feet high and we can't seem get them under control

Question: Could you do a video where you show your favorite types of climbing roses? Some for both sun and shade as well as strong fragrant ones? I am looking to put one by my chicken coop and would love to see what you have had luck with or recommend.

The planter is so pretty but when you placed the moss and filled it with those beautiful plants I was amazed. The colors and textures and gorgeous. As always great job Laura and thank you for the education and inspiration.
