Deconstructing a Perennial Container & Planting Them in the Garden! Garden Answer Dana: Thanks for all the inspiration! QUESTION - your Peachberry Ice that you planted from the containers are so much bigger than the ones in the ground - is that because of the shade versus sun placement or because of the maturity of the plant. I just bought some heuchera and japanese painted ferns for a shaded area as I also needed deer resistant plants and read if the heuchera gets more of full shade versus part shade it will just mean smaller growth. Is this correct? or will it just take longer to get to mature size? Stay safe.

Anyone have any advice for flowers for a west facing balcony/container garden? There's light, but the sun is mostly blocked by a big tree until about 3. 30pm, then it quickly moves across the balcony until about 7. 30pm when it drops too low to hit anything but the railing. I'm planning to get some coleus, heuchera and creeping jenny/moneywort, but I'd really like some pretty flowers too that can stand the afternoon sun! If it matters, I live in Sweden so the temperatures in the peak of the summer don't usually exceed 80f.

Thanks for the video! It's true that it seems like a simple task, but it's nice to actually see you walk us through it; I feel more confident doing the same in my garden now. Also, at the very end of the video, that view through the arbor, down the path and to the door way is just so lovely and well framed! What is that arbor seating area? I don't think I've seen much of it in your other videos. Is it new or have I just missed it in the past? Either way, I love it and would love to see more of how you planned it out.

Oh my gosh, Benjamin is growing so fast. Missed seeing Russell, must have been too windy for him. I planted a planter last year with the big leaf hosta, heuchera, and the same plants you used in a video. Everything came back this year and I need to add a spring annual. So pleased. So far the deer have left my host as alone. Thanks for the video as I will get more heucheras this year to put in the yard, beautiful.

We just bought our first house and there os already 3 areas on the sides of the house that are landscaped with shrubs and rock, andn in trying to plan out whats going to go where and i dont know if i should do more of a somewhat formal alignment of plants since there are already shrubs that are centered, or if i should do like a somewhat random looking assortment of plants everywhere. !

Hey Laura! This is a bit off topic but I saw the little area where the gophers are really bad and it made me remember this article I just read about how to deal with burrowing pests. One solution they suggested was playing bass-y music under ground in one of their tunnels. It sounds strange but apparently has had some success where other methods have failed. Have you looked into this?

Thank you for sharing all your information and inspiration! I also have Heucheras and get confused for their care During and at the end of season. In our zone (8) they keep leaves through winter. Do you cut them back at some point? If so, how and when. Mine are at the point of having the thick stems that keep pushing out growth- so cut those off? Divide plant? Ack- see I need help

Ive never really liked heucheras but theyre one of few shade perennials that are safe for dogs. I really like the Black Pearl, but I was advised not to use it because it would fade away in the garden bed since its so dark and a plant that stays low to the ground. How much truth is there to this? Any other advice to avoid them fading into the background?

I love watching your videos! My husband I bought our first house end of June, so this is the first spring I have been able to get outside and plant flower beds and do different containers. Im trying out some supertunias this year as well as a huechera because of watching your videos. Thank you for the inspiration, I am learning a lot!

I just discovered you a few days ago and LOVE watching your videos. Thank you for doing them. I see you put Biotone Starter in the hole before you planted your flowers do you also do the same for vegetables? Or do you sprinkle that on top of the soil around the plant? Sorry newbie here with fertilizer.
