5 Shrubs that Deliver Huge FallColor! Garden Answer Tessa: If a plant is rated 2-9, what does that mean for those planting in zones 10 and up? I understand a plant's USDA zone rating is indicative of its cold tolerance. But it's confusing that these rankings are represented as a window that excludes warmer climates. For example, I planted a PW bloomerang lilac this spring and noticed it's rated 3-7. I'm in zone 8b and am pretty sure it is perennial for me. If that is correct, why do they stop at 7? Why not show it as 3-11 or 3 and up?

I live almost on the other side of the earth, I love gardening and I love your videos. I got huge kick from this video and I went through most of the local garden centres and was able to get 3 of those shrubs you presented, one of them I already had in the garden and one of them I just did not want; )
Even though we dont have PW here, same plants we are still able to get.
And thankfully enough, my zone is similar to yours aswell; )
Thank you, Laura, so much!

Grew Korean Spice Viburnum in last garden, didn't know one like Baby Spice would create berries! Will do that in our newer garden! Have a question about a Carlecephalum Feagrant Viburnum. Planted one in 2017 in our new garden, but has never bloomed. We have not pruned it. Grew to 8 feet so far. was in close to full sun and moved it 2 seasons ago to full sun, but still no blooms. Laura, do you have any suggestions? Thank you.

I bought a Temple of Bloom in the quart size last spring and liked to joke about my new tree, as it was only about six inches tall. At the end of this, it's second, season it now over 4 feet and growing nicely into a tree shape. Deer did sample it this year which set it back a little, but it still has a few buds that are starting to open. Love this plant, happy to see it get some attention!

When it comes to zones, does the higher number mean thats as warm a climate as it can tolerate? Living in an area that can be hot and dry with strong winds through October at times (Southern California, it get confusing when something is a zone 5 to 8 sand our zone is 10-11. I wish the growers would should a heat tolerance index as well.

This video was very informative and I enjoyed it. Can you perhaps talk about xeric plants and especially shrubs in one of your videos? This year ( I live in the Chicago area - Zone 5B/6A) we had very little rain in the summer and I lost some of my Arborvitae so I am hoping you can provide suggestions for evergreen or deciduous plants.

I'm looking for more info on the buckthorn. Is it the same invasive buckthorn that is in Northern Illinois/Wisconsin? Our forest preserves have programs for volunteers to remove it from their lands and we spent this spring (and probably the next 2+ years removing it from our small woodland area.

Buckthorn? is this related in any way to the invasive species everyone is battling?
How could you not include juneberry/serviceberry? It has it all. Spring flowers, edible berries and gorgeous fall foliage. Technically a tree but very small or can be kept shrub size

Hey Laura!
Thank you for finally featuring Seven Son Flower Temple of Bloom! I have been a huge fan of this plant for a long time. Oddly enough I watched the past two years videos for fall/ winter interest from you and am back to sketching my garden beds out for next year!

Thank you for this video! The buckthorn is exactly what I needed, but I had no idea. Thanks to you I recognized it at my local garden store today and was able to get it under the end of season sale! I learn so much from you!
