Planting a Rose of Sharon that Gets SUPER Tall! Garden Answer Denise: We planted a white pillar in early May from gallon pot against a fence to add privacy screen with my neighbor. Since we live in a townhouse with small garden, this is going to be perfect. The shrub has already grown a couple of feet and has been blooming all summer. Next year I expect it to peak over the fence we share with neighbor. I have paired this one with the Sugar Tip Rose of Sharon on adjoining back fence which is also columnar and has gotten very tall. Along the remaining back fence of my yard are two more Rose of Sharons, a white Diana and a pink one with dark center. I pruned the pink one's lower branches when it was new to take more of a tree form; and it now arches to provide shade over our garden benches. I love the way these plants have softened all the neighboring hardscape and provide privacy and color for a long season.

Bless your heart girl. I so need info on growing these climbing roses. love that you areshowing us this. I needed to plant something in front of my study window - as when I work late at night, sometimes I have someone knocking on my window at 2: 30 am. so I am using my roses to create a safety barrier. now, how do I prune them though - this has been the 2nd year they are in my garden? Any help would help - and yes, they are in full sun.

I almost skipped this video because I am still heart broke. Last year I ordered 2 in the spring. i planted 1 on each side of my front door on the west side of the house in full sun. They were beautiful last summer but they did not come back this year. I did everything that I was suppose to do and waited past the time they should have come back. Proven winners said maybe it was my zone. I live in a zone 5. Just confused and heart broke.

I had a rose of Sharon in tree form but couldnt get past the darn seeds dropping and starting new plants absolutely everywhere including the grass, I tore that tree out so fast it would make your head spin and never planted another and never will but I did plant perennial hibiscus in a few different colors and love them. Laura will be pulling baby rose of Sharon out of that poor drift of lilies all summer

I sadly just had to remove my white pillar Rose of Sharon. It was beautiful when in bloom and was at its mature height of 16 (or more) feet. Unfortunately, it was planted at the edge of our patio and walkway and the area was constantly messy when the flowers would die and drop. Had it been in a non traffic area, it would definitely been a keeper. Not a negative post, just a heads up for where you plant.

Hey Laura! I'm doing a project in school and I thought I would ask the gardening expert some of my questions!
What do you love about the garden? What do you hate about it? Why do you do it? What little things are harder than it should be in the garden? What are threats to your garden?
Thanks! I hope you have a good day: )

I have the purple variety in my garden. I planted them in spring of 2019 and they've grown nicely but this year they both completely flopped over on their side. They're up against my fence so I tied them up so they're upright again. I'm hoping the base gets a little stronger and will be able to hold itself up eventually.

i love Rose of Sharon. Unfortunately, i planted three right before summer heat hit in Texas and I've been babying them all summer long. A lot of the leaves died off, but came back with constant watering. Any suggestions as to what I can do to give them a boost? I'm in East Texas so its still hot here. lol

I took all my branches and wrapped them together kinda like a braid and then clipped the ends that were sticking out while it was dormant and it makes a tighter pillar, stronger and makes it not look like a bunch of sticks in dormancy! Please please please try it!
