An Unimpressive Sweet Potato Harvest, Installing Some Harvest Extenders & Winterizing the Grass! DAVID: I have those protective tents and they also come with a netting screen. I plant brassicas under them early in the spring with the protective cover, when the weather warms I switch to the netting which keeps the cabbage moths off the broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower. No pesticides needed. Been using them for 3 years now, so I just move them around for crop rotation. I had to use C clamps to attach them to the raised beds so they dont blow away. The whole system is fantastic

Laura, when you said the garden was teeming with earthworms I got worried. Are you sure the worms aren't the Asian Jumping worms? I heard they are rampant in Oregon and they are not good in your soil. I have them in Philadelphia and they take all of the nutrients out of the soil. You soil looks starts to look like coffee grinds. I'm hoping I am wrong because right now there is very little that you can do to get rid of them.

Stake that three season tent down. I put that on my beds last fall, we do not have heavy winds, but one windy night, it blew about 20 feet away. I have Gardener's Supply raised beds, they fit inside perfectly. I ended up leaving the frame up without the cover, and we used netting to keep deer and rabbits out of the summer garden. Would love to hear if your high wind affects them.

Will the strawberries you planted in the galvanized containers earlier this summer need to be covered to make it through the winter? Do you plant them in the ground or what? Not sure how to overwinter mine, zone 5. I think it would be cool if you marked Benjamins height each year on the side of the stairs so you can show him how much hes growing each year.

Could you also use the chicken wire crop coop to put a chicken in and then put the cage w a chicken or 2 on your raised beds when they are ready done and after you have harvested whatever you want to keep? Would give the chickens a chance to eat out of the bed and leave their droppings for fertilizer, plus they'd till it for ya!

Hi Laura and Aaron! I really like the cloche and the plant protection covers. They'd be really handy to have and they look nice, too. I'm glad you have nice stairs in your barn now. It's too bad you get very many sweet potatoes, but at least you got some, so not a total fail. LOL! Thank you for sharing!

Do you keep the cameras you have set up at different places rolling throughout the entire project even when you are at a different place on your property? I wonder because you are filmed as you walk back to the vegetable garden with the big raised bed cover when you just were at the barn

Sweet potato leaves are delicious and nutritious and picking the smaller, newer leaves are the best. I stir fry them but they are so very mild that I think it would be better in salad - maybe next year. Going to let them climb up the hog fence and just pick daily for lunch garden soup.

We also planted a late batch of sweet potatoes as a succession crop, and the harvest was also unimpressive! It wasn't a complete lost because we now know not to plant sweet potatoes as a second succession crop. Especially in zone 5. We are always learning! Thanks for sharing.
