Trimming Butterfly Bushes & Roses + Transplanting Lavender! Garden Answer Gayle: Laura, A question regarding the planting of butterfly bushes, please. I love all your videos and your hints. And in the video on planting you advise planting them high and not mulching. I bought two from Proven Winners (based on your amazing recommendations) and got Pugster Blue. The info card on them says to plant even with soil level and mulch 2-3 inches. Augh! I want success with them and am going with your recommendation and crossing my fingers! Greenville, SC. Thanks so much!

Have you ever tried Wilt Stop on the topiaries? It was recommended to try on a palm we have (and did not plant! Prior owners did) that really suffers in our winters to keep fronds from drying out. I haven't tried it, but will next year (if it survives from our unseasonably rough snow. But when you were talking about the topiaries it made me wonder if they would benefit from the same protection
Edit: the next video answered that question!

Thank you for the great information! I love Zephirine Drouhin roses! I had one at our home in another state and to my everlasting dismay I forgot to bring some cuttings. People take care of your knees. I know you do not understand now but the years will fly by and before you know it your knees will be in trouble. Keep yourself safe for as long as you can so you can teach us about gardening as long as you can! Thank you.

So you said second story plants! Totally understand the phrase so my question is for lilacs! They do the same right? If unmaintained? You guys have your old lilac youre talking about taking out or maybe hard pruning. Can you cut it to the ground and create a new leader or cut it and leave it be a few years cutting suckers and let it do it on its own? Hope that makes sense! WA state here. Thank you! Love your content.

I just want to say that I love watching your videos. What would you recommend for a climbing plant, my mom has an old grape vine that we took down and now its so empty and I would love to have something that would fill the space, but something that wont attract to many bees so that we can still sit underneath, any suggestions.
Thanks Olivia

So much knowledge you share every video. Love it. Im assuming Sweet Romance lavender is proven winters? I love to hear him say sure: its like his polite way of acknowledging his rejected idea Im wondering if you could talk about and show us your weeping cherry. Just bought 2 and had never noticed you had one. Or I forgot.

You inspired me. I went out this morning and trimmed out all the dead and weak branches in my butterfly bush. Looks sooooo much better! I think I can hear the plant say, aaaaaawe. It will bloom out beautifully, I'm sure. Thank you for all your great tips and for taking the uncertainty out of all the garden tasks.

Im excited to see how beautiful the chicken coop will be once everything grows in! Here in Hawaii, my lavender are in full bloom - in fact, its starting to get unruly but Im hesitant to cut off blooms. Could you share some general tips on pruning lavender to create a nice shape during the growing season?

I use wilt pruf on topiary during the winter. I even use it on white pine trees which I harvest from the woods in late fall. These are used to mark the rock wall along the driveway for purposes of snow plowing. Usually the needles stay green for most of the winter thanks to the coating of wilt pruf.

Yessss! The chicken coop bed is my favorite bed! Everytime you go by it I get excited even when it's dormant and bare because I know the beauty to come. Would you be willing to share a design layout with the bed dimensions, plants used etc? I would love to recreate that bed in my own space!
