Comparison of the Different Augers I Use for Planting! Garden Answer Eric: Tips. Didn't read all the comments so maybe these have been said.
For planting with an auger. I like to set my drill on the lower setting used for putting in screws, instead of the higher setting used for drilling wood or metals, etc. The lower/screw setting also can have a racheting adjustment that stops the blade rotation if it catches on something like a big rock/root. This can save your wrists from a harsh jolt.
I find there is usually no need to put any significant pressure down when digging with the auger. The blades tend to pull the auger into the ground and you really only need to guide it while drilling holes.
And. Don't rush. It's tempting to try to go faster and faster as you plant a lot with an auger. But a measured pace is best and is still way faster than other methods of planting.
With two helpers and one 2 x 24 auger I planted about 600 perennial plugs in a rocky hillside this spring in under 3 hours. One person placed plants per the design, one drilling holes, the third put in the plant. Not a speed record, but an easy pace to work at and no struggle overall.
Happy planting

Laura, this video had the exact content I needed to make a decision regarding the size (diameter) of auger I need for my DeWalt drill (I have the 20v you have. In reading about you, I learned that you are from East Oregon. I went to high school in Portland (OR) and finished in Boise (ID) - went to Capital High School. Anyway, my wife and I live in a suburb of Fort Lauderdale (South Florida) near the Everglades. I just started a landscape renovation project (we have nearly 5, 000 Sq. Ft. of terrain begging for better landscapting. I am definitely planning to follow some of your advice - my plants will be mostly Zone 10b types, but I'll experiment with other varieties.
Just wanted to write a few words to express my gratitude for your time, dedication, but most importantly for sharing your botanical knowledge and experience.

The long 3 one would be handy for digging a post hole. Start the hole with a shorter auger, then switch to the longer auger to get to the depth you need when putting in a post. I hate using post hole diggers, but my 3 auger does a great job of getting the hole started and I maneuver it around to make the hole a bit bigger. I then clean up the edges with the digger. Excellent review of the augers, thanks.

Thank you so much for this video. I had thought that using an auger would be a solution for me in gardening but your honesty about upper body strength especially arm strength makes an auger solution not the best for me. I will probably have to use assistance in planting bigger plants and especially in planting smaller trees and bushes. I learn so much from each video you post.

Laura, your videos are so professional! You and Aaron just keep getting better and better! Love them! And love your family! My daughter and son-in-law are building a house on 5 acres so I see the need for a few augers in their future! My 3 inch wont be sufficient for their space! Sharing this video with them. Thanks! Laura, everything is really coming together so beautifully. I'm very excited and to be quite honest with you, I'm doing my best to be patient when it comes to seeing an update on your Beautiful greenhouse I can't wait to see it in it's grand completion. If I were you I'd probably sit for hours every day, just adoring it

Thanks for posting this video! It was so helpful. I actually just bought my first power planter, but I was really unsure if I was choosing the right size and length. Like you, I learn visually. This video came at the perfect time, and now I understand the sizes, uses, and drill requirements! Thank you!

Laura, thank you for this information. It would be so helpful if you would do a short update and demonstrate how to attach the handle to the drill? I bought an auger and was hoping to purchase and attach a handle, but I can seem to figure that part out! Thanks again for all you teach us.

Just a FYI. Laura you and Arron are in the power planter video on Amazon. I was watching their video and there are a few clips of you and Arron digging a whole and tossing in Bio Tone. Anyway thanks for the informational video really helped me narrow down the auger I need.
