Planting 5 Types of Shrubs in our Friends New Garden! Garden Answer Helen: I am always trying to understand hardiness zones vs. chill hours. I just looked at the Black Lace Elderberry you featured in this video on PV website. It lists hardiness zone as 4-7. Then the website stated the following: Zones are based on the lowest average temperature an area is expected to receive during the winter. They are used to determine whether a plant is likely to be perennial in your area. If your zone is equal to or higher than the zone listed for the plant, it will be hardy for you and thrive in your climate. Since I am in zone 9a and this plant is listed as available at a local nursery, I should be good to go? Which opens up a whole list of plants I can grow, if PV statement is correct. Or does it only apply to this particular plant? I get so confused.

I posted a comment on one of your videos 2 or 3 years ago about calycanthus. It's a Southern shrub, almost a small tree size, that will forever remind me of my grandmother who had one in her yard. The flowers are more like bracts and, just like the name implies, they smell so sweet. We used to cut them and put bouquets on her table. I don't know how big they will get in your area, but where I grew up 3 in that space would certainly fill it and might block the window. On the other hand, the scent when in bloom will be nice coming in the window. I hope they do great there!

Two questions; will the Rose of Sharon plants be okay if the frost got to them and totally off topic but the paver patio for the hot tub reminded me of the paver patio video you had created. I watched that video today as my husband and I are planning on tackling a paver patio for our new shed and I was wondering if the patio you created for him is still okay and would you recommend any advice for us tackling this job? Thank you Laura for inspiring us to be brave enough to try many projects that we learn from you.

You are such a trooper planting in all that wind! So delighted to see you adding calycanthus to your friends' garden -- we have the native variety here and I LOVE this Proven Winners cross; need to add it as a backdrop to our magnolia! Also loving the double file viburnum. Growing up in NYC a park near our apartment had this and I always wondered what it was. such pretty profuse blooms and what cool leaves! I love how the planting plan here is coming together beautifully already.

Due to your direct inspiration, I spent a LOT of $$$ on new plants, perennials, to round out a bed that was recently planted with new Manzanita. i was tired of the monotony, and put in 15 Lavender, 30 Salvia and 5 Hebo. I was quite pleased with myself. Im on a roll. I need more for a backup against a small hillside and Im off to the plant store this morning. I think Ive found a new purpose in life!

This is great, a big project, love it: . You had some projects in the past years you did for various relatives and friends, could we possibly get updates on these? I love these projects, but initial videos usually have young plants and gardens don't really look their best until plants get a bit bigger. I would really really love to see how some of those gardens have developed over the years.

Well, I just finished what I will call a Laura and Aaron day, my husband and I planted forty trees and I even wore my Garden Answer sweatshirt. I am really proud of myself, this time last year I was getting ready for shoulder replacement surgery and was really feeling physically and mentally down, just look what positive things can happen in one year, I am very thankful!

Lol! I know you have addressed this before but I and I am sure many others are just not understanding why you dont pull your hair back!
Watching this and your hair blowing all over I was like put your hair in a ponytail! My hair is the length of yours and when Im doing anything outside if its windy, I have my ball cap on and a ponytail
Even your moms wears one

My Granny had a sweetshrub in her side yard when I was a kid and it smelled absolutely amazing. In NC, it's called a Sweet Betsy (Calycanthus Floridus. Aphrodite is an improved version of it from what I've read. I've got a Simply Scentsational on order from PW which should be delivered the week of May 9th. Super excited.

Drip question. I see long runs here. I have a similar situation, but last week when I tested my drip, it wasnt making it to the back of the yard. I have a 25 psi regulator with a back flow preventer on the timer. Any advice for getting the water to travel farther or do I need another spigot in the mix? Thank you.
