Planting a Bunch of Perennials & a Few Dahlias! Garden Answer Gina: Laura, I just love your videos, and watch them nightly! I find you informative and calming after a long day on working from home. Thanks to you, I have purchased several types of Epsoma soil conditioner products. Cant wait to use Biotone, and appreciate learning today that I can work it into soil if I dont put it in the hole when planting.
I live in zone 10a and while I work full-time, I take care of 3 gardens, including a community theatre garden, and add a 4th garden when time permits. Im 54 like you so would like to get what you use. Please tell me about augers. I want to buy a battery- operated auger and use it for plants in 4 inch and 1 gallon containers. I dont have any power tools and anticipate buying a brand where I can interchange batteries. Keep up the great work! Best wishes to you, Aaron, and your family!

I love how when Benjamin brings Laura something, she never says I don't need that, will you please put that back She just takes it says thank you! I have always done this with my son for this reason. Ive learned that they just want to help- just let them feel like they've done that! It only takes a second to put back what theyve brought you! I do the same in the grocery store! I let my son put random things in the cart, instead of arguing with him over whether we need it or not, I just put it back when he's not looking. when he's a little older I can work on teaching him the things we jeed vs. the things we dont.

Every different place in your garden becomes my favorite place. Like when youre on the west side Im like the west side is totally my favorite place. But then when youre in the south garden and the South Garden has so much opportunity totally my favorite. But then the west side of your house with that tall urn and sidewalk also totally my favorite. Then the country girl in me loves the chicken coop and the cottage vibes. And when Im feeling sophisticated I love the versailles garden and of course the Hartley for when Im feeling fancy.

Would planting ajuga in a bed that meets lawn be a mistake? Do you think I could contain it and not have it invade our grass? Yours are next to your brick walkway which is going to look beautiful. I am searching for a hearty ground cover for one of my beds to smother out the grass and garden sorrel that has taken over but am worried it might invade our grass. Hubby would not be pleased if that happened

You got me to pull the trigger on those large phlox this year as I need a blast of color at about that height. Because they are knew to me, I appreciated you attending to those phlox when you saw them needing pruning. That being said, it also worried me about those I just planted - do they continue to bloom throughout the year with pruning like you did or are they only spring color? Thanks!

Don't cut Ajuga! They are covering ground not with the long stems but with child plants they create at the end of the stems (where roots grow under leaves. Also the best way to propagate Ajuga is to cover with soil halfway of the long stem. So when you cut it, you loose around 5 new plants. BTW this veriety looks great with other plants (I was not a fan of the moon garder.

Great groundcover for you to try: phlox stolonifera! Beautiful single phlox flower on 6-8 stems in May above ground hugging small green leaves. Likes part shade/part sun. Will spread aggressively if happy. I'm in zone 5b MA. I also have it in sun, but it doesn't flower ad well in full sun. And it's a US native.
Betony is a great plant too.

I made the BIG mistake of planting beautiful purple ajuga in my garden. Three years later I am still discovering and pulling it from the flower bed and grass. But I also have the ajuga cousin wit pretty pink flowers that is pale like what you have. and yes, it spreads but it is easy to pull and is not aggressive like the dark purple ajuga.

I have 3 Oso Easy Paprika shrubs planted in sufficient light that cane out of dormancy with beautiful green healthy foliage but quickly lost most of their leaves. There are no signs of insects or disease and the few leaves still on are green and healthy. Any ideas why they would do this? Have you experienced this?
