The most intimidating thing for me about growing dahlias is winter storage. It's probably because I live in the suburbs that are located in hardiness zone 6a. We do have a basement and a garage, but neither of them remain in the temperature range needed to prevent freezing or to induce dormancy. Although the garage is warmer than the garden, it is only 5 to 10 degrees warmer, so that when the temperature outside is 20 degrees or lower, the tubers freeze. The basement remains too warm, maybe 55 degrees or so. I would love to hear from anyone with similar circumstances about solutions to this dilemma. Thanks for such an informative and interesting video. Like all your videos, it is warm, inviting, and friendly.

My one and only time I purchased dahlias was from a big box grocery store. They were in a plastic breathable bag. I placed the bag of dahlias on the ground as I dug my hole, got distracted and came back to blackened dahlias, scorched by the sun (we are in Zone 9. I planted them anyway. First year, we saw stems and leaves. I left them in the ground over the winter. This is the second year, and we were blessed with two beautiful white blooms. WHAT! These dahlias are survivors and a reminder to never give up!

I get such a sense of nostalgia when you show dahlias, foxgloves, sweet peas etc. Takes me right back to the cottage gardens of my childhood. You have provided so much information for my small garden, I really appreciate all your hard work (which you make look easy by the way. I am approaching 70 and gardening fills me with such joy and keeps me young. lol. Thank you for giving back in such a beautiful way!

That was a crazy storm. The words you speak when you find something beautiful are the same ones running through my head. Where you find beauty and awe is exactly where my eye also finds it. No matter how small a detail. Ill keep watching.

OMG Dahlia's! There's so much to learn about them. Dahlia's are so beautiful yet intimidating to try to grow, especially having to winter-over in a cool dry place. Discovering Dahlia's sounds like the perfect book to get started.
