Planting a Huge Load of Butterfly Bushes! Garden Answer Lynne: I'm also a professional gardener, my business is 26 years old this year, and I have designed many gardens and taken care of many plants in mid-coast Maine, with the help of a great crew. Can't imagine gardening in 100 degree weather. good for you for getting out there and doing what you need to keep your gardens going. Gardening is not for the faint of heart, especially when it gets hot, and if it's 90 degrees in midcoast Maine, than that's a very hot day and luckily we don't get many of those. Aren't you hotter gardening in black?

I have a question that's off topic, but I can't find the answer anywhere. I'm working with a 7 x 25 ft. blank slate space (aside from 2 shrubs. I hear that you should plant in 3's, 5's, 7's, etc. in odd numbers. The issue for me is cost. These perennials and shrubs cost a lot of money. I'm paying like $10-$30 each, $30-$90. Multiply that times about 5-6 and it really adds up. Can I plant just one? Don't these perennials spread? I'm fairly new to this so I honestly don't know.

I am trying to follow your and your mom's guide: green, blue, red/purple, yellow groupings in my container roof deck garden. Do pink plants fit in that same red/purple category?
I just added a cats pajamas, pink profusion salvia and a gaura to my container garden. Added some rose campion for the blueish leaves. Your videos and info have helped beegin to train my eyes and plant choices. I have learned so much about plants and gardens from you. THANK YOU.

Hello & Happy July! I enjoy your videos so much and seem to always come back to get my answers from you. I'm going to try to compost and know that egg shells, and coffee grounds for many plants, are good things to include, but. After enjoying a pineapple, I cut up rind and blended with coffee grounds & liquid coffee. Would that be something to use in compost? I guess the moisture/liquidity is throwing me off. Thank you: )

I have four big butterfly bushes in my backyard. I absolutely love them for attracting bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.
But my favorite visitors at my butterfly bushes are the hummingbird moths. I just love them!
If you catch a quick glimpse of one of them, you might think it's a hummingbird, till you look again.
The hummingbird moths don't sting or bite and are just fascinating to watch!

You blow my mind. Maybe it is the dry air up there. I am in the TN valley where humidity pretty much stays 80% and up. Then there is you, in your black 3/4 sleeves, the high today is 104. I would be all NOPE. Once we get into the 90s around here, it can become hard to breathe. I am always so fascinated by the differences between climates.

I love my butterfly bush- here in zone 5 I actually cut mine down to the ground every spring (usually April) and they just come back every summer and blooms prolifically. Love these plants! I'm curious about the walkway, you don't need to set it into gravel to level it out? Any stones I place in bare soil tend to sink over time.

Gorgeous! You'll keep them pruned back so they don't get overgrowned. We had to removed two overgrown butterfly bushes the year after we moved it. They weren't in the right place as it was planted a foot from the front walk, which is covered. I planted lavander grosso there instead and spaced them further from the main walk.

I have a narrow walkway between our retaining wall and our neighbors driveway and I have butterfly bushes on both sides with perennials. We call it butterfly alley. At times during the season, when you walk down this area the butterflys almost attack you they are so dense. We love it!

I'm so excited to see your flagstone pathway! After suffering from sticker shock from bids from several different landscapers this spring, we were debating whether we could put in a flagstone pathway in our side yard by ourselves. I can't wait to see a video on the steps you took.
