Peonies are my ABSOLUTE favorite flowers. I have about a dozen of them, but there's always room for more.
Have you harvested any at the marshmallow stage before I finally tried that last year and it was so fun having a peony in the winter. Though the bloom wasn't as impressive as the fresh-cut ones.
I lost a couple over our low snow cover winter. (Minneapolis)
Today, I'm going to relocate one that hasn't bloomed for many years (I know this isn't ideal timing. I think it sunk too low and then weeds competed for space.
My favorite variety is 'Paula Faye'. It has such a vibrant coral/magenta color. It's the anemone type. One I lost was that variety (I had 2. Newest to my collection, 'Duchesse de Nemours' and 'Julia Rose' Itoh peony. Such an intoxicating fragrance from the Duchesse. As I remember peonies from my grandma's garden. Unfortunately, the second one I planted of that variety didn't make it.
That's okay, we pivot whenever faced with that problem. I'm now on the lookout for a PW 'Crema' Remembrance rose. This garden is a memorial garden for my sister who passed with her husband 25 years ago in an automobile accident. I'm having so much fun refreshing this garden (even my BIL gets a refresh) with plants that have special names. I ordered iris rhizomes from Schneiders and expect them mid summer. I'm especially excited to grow 'Sew Little Time' since Marcia was crafty and sewed lots of things.

I’m not much further south from you, in the EP WV, and you had 82 deg yesterday It may have topped 60 here, if that, and has been like this for days! The coldest and wettest May I’ve seen in my 12 yrs here! I planted a Felix Crouse in 2023 and looked at last years photo. I can’t tell it apart from the other one you have! But this year all I got were tiny shrunken buds that never developed. Very disappointing! Will have to research. Thank you for your lovely videos! Always learn something new, even at my advanced age and I’ve been gardening since 1978!

Hi Danielle! Is there anything better than peony week Mine are all still very tightly budded, with no colour showing. I live in Canada, near Detroit, which is only a little further north than your state, but your garden seems much further ahead than mine. It has been unseasonably cold here as well, which is a nice change since it has allowed all the spring flowers to last much longer than usual. Your peony arrangements are gorgeous, and I look to making some of my own soon. Is there any word on Grace She’s been on my mind this past week.

The bouquets at the end looked so fresh and vibrant. I bought 3 bare root Sarah Bernhardt peonies 2 yrs ago. They’re finally blooming. 1 was dry and no roots so I just set it and really did forget about it. I got two blooms on it! I cut them off to enjoy inside so the plant can conserve energy for the roots. I plan to do more changes in the garden. Starting w my catmint to the edge of the border instead middle of the flower bed. The pic of your grandma is sweet. I’m sure she would have been super proud of you!

I think the raspberry peony that is more open and you can see the yellow middle easier is the Karl Rosenfeld and the other fuller one is the Felix. I also am having a similar peony naming dilemma as I also think I have a very old (at least 30 years) Lady Alexandria Duff so last year I literally planted a Shirley Temple as well just so I can compare them! Plus I also have another old light pink bomb variety that I can't seem to find an exact match for!

The main downsides of using Venmo include security risks, privacy concerns, and potential for scams. Venmo's social media-like features can make transactions visible to a wider audience than intended, and the app isn't designed for business transactions. Additionally, Venmo doesn't offer the same level of protection for sellers as other payment platforms, and there are fees associated with using credit cards for payments.

My problem with peonies is that they don't last long enough. Love them and would buy more, but if I don't pay attention to that corner of my garden, they open and fall apart before I know it. I don't know what kind they are as they were on my property in Maryland when I bought it 22 years ago. My house was built in 1920 so it's hard to tell even how long they have been here. Beautiful, but gone in the blink of an eye.

I visited Raby Castle in County Durham UK and the gardens used nepeta repeatedly which looked amazing. They were designed by Lady Barnard and Luciano Giubbilei. I think it’s a good plan to move the Cala Lilies as I tried them last year at the front of the border, but the wet weather we had didn’t suit them, so I’m using nepeta at the front of the border this year and it looks much better on mass.

I loved the peony farm visit, and am going to have my first coral charm bloom open in a few weeks. It's cold and wet here too, and this spring has been absent, for being able to work outside with decent weather. I'm so far behind, but hopefully can be outside on Monday. I would love to know the secrets of some of the other things that have happened on your property. sounds intriguing, lol

The audio was great in this video! This is my first year with large blooming peony plants in the garden (Sarah Bernhardts) and I'm not sure what to do with the foliage once the blooming period ends. Do you leave it up the rest of the season, or cut it back by a bit to make room for other things I've heard both, would love to know your thoughts/experience!

Your beautiful garden blooming with peonies is such a gorgeous sight. It's my favorite of all flowers as it brings back loving memories of my parent's home with the driveway lined in peony blossoms of all colors. Your peony arrangements in the library are unbelievable and the photograph of your wedding with your grandmother and mother is precious and lovely.

The garden looks beautiful, Danielle! My husband loves tropicals, but unfortunately we have found aphids to be terrible on tropical hibiscus to the point where we don't grow them anymore. We are in a similar climate to you and prefer not to spray, so if a plant really struggles we just go with something else. Maybe you will have better luck though!

I have the same magenta peony and it definitely has a lot of petals and can’t see the pollen much - I want to say they’re Karl Rosenfield because I got them from Home Depot online and that’s the one that they currently sell but also that was 4 years ago so they could have had Felix before and Karl now They’re beautiful regardless

Hi Danielle. You asked which peony is Karl Rosenfield vs Felix Krause. Karl Rosenfield is a double peony, 36 tall, and is considered a red peony, whereas Felix Krause is a bomb peony. The bomb peonies have lower single petals with a literal bomb shaped mound of petals in the center, 32 tall and raspberry red in color. Hope that helps!

That peony farm was really interesting to me as I have one Coral Charm and one Pink Hawaiian Coral, and they look quite similar. In fact I couldn't tell the two apart from the flowers, but Coral Charm does bloom a few days earlier. I thought maybe it got more shade from our pin oak, but even in open sun Pink Hawaiian Coral blooms later.

Danielle, do you have any advice on what they call over planting I think Like, the peony foliage will look bad as some point so what do you plant to mask that Zinnias I’m really stuck in this style of gardening. How to get blooming perennials than what to do after that to hide foliage Or is peony foliage beautiful even after blooming

As always, your garden looks beautiful. I agree that a raspberry peony would be lovely added to the left side of the flower walk. Like you, I am trying to repeat fewer plants in my garden for a more peaceful and cohesive look. While there will always be a place for that special specimen plant, I think it will suit my aesthetic better.

Good morning Danielle, Everything looks fabulous! I am looking forward to watching your Calla Lilies as this is my first year with them. I am growing them in pots and they look great; simple and elegant, so that would be my recommendation for the library patio. As always, thanks for the inspiration!
