Prepping for Stone Walls on my Off Grid Outdoor Kitchen

Work continues on my outdoor kitchen as I prepare the exterior walls of the timber frame structure for stone veneer. tango2paris: Shaun, looks great. I have always wanted a stove like this! Are you going to be adding some lift up shutters like you did on your first cabin? To keep the worst of the weather out in the worst of winter? Or even incumbent weather where you want to be out there, but it's blowing kind of hard? I couldn't think of a better spot to spend most of my time.

Shawn, on splitting those river rock, try building a fire and putting the rock in the fire. The moisture in the rock will usually split them right in the center, also when attaching the stone to the Durock (that s the good stuff, anyone wanting to build a good shower enclosure, that s the stuff to use) start at the top, use a notched trowel and work your way down and you won t get grout or mortar all over your work. Nice job, it should look great when your done.
Are you going to build another wood burning oven (like your pizza or bread oven from your first place, that seemed like such a nice addition when you built it and it seemed like you used it quite a bit.

Shawn--The home we moved into in Kelowna had a kitchen stove that was part wood-burning and part electric. That was in 1949 when I was 13 and the chore I enjoyed was chopping up the kindling and wood for the stove. It looked like yours but probably wider. The stove-top was solid steel with the holes that were usually covered. The there were two electric round plates. The upper was likely a warming oven heated by electricity. --Sigh,

Can someone let me know what it is That is being applied post the charing process? I am sure he has mentioned it in a previous video, but I figure someone may be able to comment quicker than I could find it by going through the past videos. This method of protecting the wood really interests me, and I want to try some things on a smaller scale on my end.

new tool feathers and wedges and maybe a stone hammer sledge with a cutting side? lots of stone veneer not just for cabin, raised grow beds crawl spaces under porches etc. Will you be building a lime stone oven to slake your own stuff while generating bio ash for the grow beds? lotta brush to cleanup on a farm stead and fire is your friend?

I love hearing the rain on the metal roof. I would be out like a light listening to it if I layed down. Your stone wall reminds me of our fireplace in my folks home which was stone and in the middle the builders found a stone in the shape of a heart the size you showed us splitting, Hope you have a good next week.

If I recall the other outdoor kitchen was great, but didn't have the feel of a gathering place or a hangout spot. But this surely does. I'd even be tempted to sleep out there of a warm night, lol. The stone walls are going to look really nice.
Hang loose, ya big moose, little moose, and Lady Moosen.

Hello Shawn: thank you another good day at the home stead. I love the idea of this out side kitchen and I bet on those very hot days you can cook out side and leave the kitchen for other types of gathings. The stove if the focus point and I am sure you are getting a lot compliments about it.

Shawn, seeing your beautiful wood stove brings back memories of my grandmother who refused to give up hers in favor of a gas stove my dad & his brother & sisters wanted to buy for her. The bread she baked in it was the best I've ever tasted. RIP gram.

I really enjoyed watching as I always do! Thank you so much for sharing! Lots of hard work within itself video taping and editing those videos, but I'm sure still rewarding at the same time! Hope Emily is getting better by the day since her accident!

So nice! If I get anything from Dad's settlement I'm putting down a deposit on a cabin on a lease. It will suck leasing, but that is the best I can do because I'm a loser with no savings. At least I'll be living camping life in the mountains.

Great stuff, work on the kitchen is really coming on and it is at a really interesting phase (from a viewing point-of-view. I personally prefer these shorter edited videos, as I do find that I'm 'fast-forwarding' through the longer ones.

Love this kitchen. I have an outdoor kitchen as well. It is very normal in some tropical areas of the world, but in this case it is in a cold climate. I don't see any provision for a washing up sink and it's plumbing? Will there be one?

This guy just builds and builds and builds and never quits. I liked the small cabin at the other location but he couldn't stop over building. He's awesome but it feels like he doesn't know when to quit and just enjoy all he's built.

That is going to be an awesome space! Are you planning on a big deck off of the end?
For a while there I thought maybe there would be skylights.
Is the cupola going to be a viewing station? That would be pretty neat!

Your sense of accomplishment has got to be huge! I could see myself being quite happy in that outdoor kitchen, hot cook stove, then you get a cooler summer breeze. perfect! Love the rock on the outer perimeter too.

Watching you cook on that old woodstove reminded me of my grandparents. Everything my grandma cooked on that woodstove was so good. You are an amazing hardworking man. My grandma would have loved you.

That outside kitchen is lookin' fierce! That wood stove is the centerpeice. What a beauty, The stone wall will be amazing. Gonna be a lot of work bustin' all those rocks but I love your creativity.

Oh the memories and smells your stove evokes! Beautiful job their Shawn. Your eye for detail compliments your vision perfectly. Thank you so much for sharing all of this with us.

The outdoor kitchen is coming along great. If you installed some of those solar tube lights I think it would bring in some good natural light, especially by the cabin entrance.
