Alligator gar is only in northern florida! I learned about that when trying to figure out what the huge gar I was hooking were on the St john's in central florida. Long noose gar apparently, didn't know they could get that big! Lost a few 4-5foot long and learned pretty quickly that Circle hooks and gar to not work. Next time when the weather calms I'm going back with fresh bluegills and larger J hooks, or using a stinger rig with treble hooks for them. Just hope the turtles don't eat the bait with the stinger rigs but if they do and can't help them, softshell turtle is tasty too. I've had to keep a few turtles in the past due to gator chomps taking them out as I bring the annoying buggers in that ate my chicken livers or cut bait.

Oh and for Yames, most of the folks here in Texas that eat Gar, make fried Gar balls, so grinding it seems to be the way to go. Again, great video I really enjoyed it.

Use a hatchet to get through the tough scales. Start under the back dorsal and work towards the head and its much easier/ faster than using sheers.

I have shot them with a bow and if the arrow goes through, their sharp scales will cut your line off losing an arrow isn't worth it.
