I caught a small bowfin in West Point Resv years ago when it was just reaching full, around '77 or '78. I thought I had a trophy bass by the strength it was pulling with - got it closer to the boat and saw what it was - my first time. I had no idea these existed at all - at 16. Luckily my friend knew and said no way we're letting it the boat. It was maybe 3 lbs and it seemed like half of that weight was gnashing teeth. My line broke before much longer, so that ended that. These are scary as h3ll up close. I was glad to catch it, though. I was using a medium spinning rod and 8lb mono tied to a small sinking black and gold Rapala. It sank for a second and as I started reeling BAM.

if you want to really cath bowfiins get you ssome small brim or cutbait brim use a circle hook (you dont set the hook with cirles or if you do its very finess way you jerk on a circle hook like a jayhook and you will pull it out of there mouth but i had a back to back bowfin hook up just be pacient you know you got them if after 5 seconds of pulling they still on. to finness hook just real in any slak then slowly pull on it after you think its set then do a hard jerk to make sure. cool fact i set a circle hook on a catfish whisker before

Play the lottery quick! Ive been fishing this stretch of the Catawba since I was a teenager. Born and raised in the Hill. Im now 50. I routinely canoe fished on these waters when there wasnt a soul in sight. While the bass fishing has always been great, but declining with the pressure dramatically, I caught my first bowfin last year on a custom swimbait. I actually thought it was a snakehead before I looked it up. Good stuff.

I love your videos keep making them I want to move to Panama too no joke. I think that bowfins tail was gnarled up as well something likes tails. I love the senko silent dead drop but you can rig the wacky weedless if you loop a small rubberband around the eye of the hook then stretch to the barb this helps keep weeds off.
