Computer Hardware Keeps Failing: New GN Mini-Site, Ethics Statements, & GN Update

This video is mostly just a GN update - us talking directly with the audience to cover our goals, ambitions, and some new features we've put out there. The new mini-site is focused primarily on part failures, but also has a static set of pages about some of our policies & ethics statements -agree or disagree, the main thing is that they're known publicly and transparent for everyone.

I like Fractal, they seems genuinely care.
A few years back I had a glass side panel exploded on me. While waiting on the replacement panel, I decided to make an acrylic one just for fun. So I sent an email to them asking for measurements of that peculiar panel, the next day I received the detailed engineering drawings of that case and a message which basically says we normally don t do this but here you go, enjoy .
It s rare these days to see a company this open that they sent drawings of their current product to some random dude from internet. And also good to know their customer service people works closely with engineers. If instead it was Dell, none of that will ever happen, I would get an Indian dude talking in circles.

Steve, I've only recently started following all your content. I've enjoyed some of the reviews over the years, but in the last year, you guys taking the fight to the companies by pointing out their flaws has been game-changing. Independent people who are genuine and distribute information to us peasants for the betterment of our lives is something that words cannot thank you enough. In the day and age where our wallets have less spending power by the day, having brilliant people like you who give us the information to make educated decisions on how to spend our money is a breath of fresh air, truly. I wish your company all the greatest success and again, thank you for what you do.

Set up a points scoreboard for how companies handle issues. If a company goes a year without a hardware or software issue, they get a gold star. In order to qualify as an issue, it would have to prevent the computer from working and affect enough people to be a problem. If a company had an issue and handled it well, they get integrity points. If they had an issue and handled it like Asus' BIOS BS, they get demerit points. You would have to come up with a scale, but it would be awesome to see a chart that shows whhich companies actually care, what companies are making stable stuff, and which companies don't care.

Hey guys, love this Idea, but might I also suggest an opposing list - of awesome manufacturers that have handled things well historically, or surprised us? This might encourage these guys to try to be on the nice list, instead of the naughty list It feels sad to have these companies, who stood up and did it right, be in this list with companies who refused to. Anyways, love the content, keep it up. Have definitely noticed the increased production quality since the move to the new space.

Thanks for discussing & compiling information about your strategies, policies, & direction.
My 0.02 is that it may be worth putting 0.02 of capacity & thought into how to set GN up so Steve, or the others in the team, can take at least a month off for health proactively, or (knock wood) in the unplanned necessity. As y'all get older, planning for this can also make eventuality passing the baton to others easier.

How about the ASUS Z690 putting the memory chip on the wrong way around and being a fire hazzard? That isn't so long ago.
And AMD gets two entries for something that wasn't AMDs fault, but rather the motherboard manufacturer ASUS again, punting up the voltage (something I commented in Der8auer's video when he first read out that pathetic blamestorming E-Mail from ASUS weeks before you did any reporting on it).

Here's the thing for me, the way fractal and artic handled things makes me as a customer WANT to buy their product. Owning up to your mistakes and taking proper measures to ensure public awareness to the issue MAKES ME WANT TO SUPPORT THEM! I wish more companies understood that consumers WANT that, and to not just try to sweep things under the rug and make the problem go away .

It would be pretty sweet if, as you guys get better at root cause analysis, if you turned into a pseudo-consulting group for these manufacturers. Even more ideal would be if they paid you for your findings. We the end users get information, and then the manufacturers get more information on the issue and hopefully it aids them in rolling out fixes more quickly.

I just bought a new ASUS Zephyrus G14 laptop few months ago. Zero issues no hardware problems. I just bought and built a brand new Intel based Z690 motherboard CPU MINI ITX monster gaming system back in October '22 Zero issues. I don't see where these issues are. I don't see where all these failures are coming from. I think it may be AMD based systems mainly.

PCs are Frankenstein machines, it s easy to make a machine with 6 different brands of parts. I expect failures, but I can t trust companies if they try to cover it up. I bought an arctic cooler for my new build, didn t buy a gigabyte PSU lol. Wasn t hyped about any Mobos, seems like there s a win for a company in that space if they can distinguish themselves.

1 thing I think would be amazing is a personalized hardware update thing. Like you build your pc, choose what components you used on the website and then you'll get a email when your mobo has a recall or if there is a big update or anything. Amazing if you build and forget. Gonna be very hard to make tho and impossible to fund I guess :(

GN continuing to lead the way, a huge thanks to the GN team for the hard work!
The mini site is ideal for people like me that bounce in and out of the tech sphere every few years. Finally, I/we have a single point of reference for what s going on at a given point in time and more importantly, who s on Steve s shit list and what they did lol

Thank you for being so disclosing with how you're navigating the economics of the review periodical space. After having seen those realities compromise basically every print org that isn't consumer union, and a great many review and community sites in this space, it's nice to hear you've found a model that works for you.

I'm of two minds.
Either this shouldn't even be a thing, but here we are... and/or this has been a thing for long enough and we're now getting an unprecedented level of scrutiny from the PC hardware community about these issues.
Either way, this was THE Gamers Nexus thing to do. I hope more folks follow your example.

Just wanted to say I love that you keep a journalist's ethics. I took that very seriously. When I was going through school to become a gaming journalist. I also love that your team structure is the opposite of ltt of keeping a lot of educated small tight team versus the over inflated money seeking team
