It's Working: No One Is Buying 8GB GPUs

Sponsor: Antec Flux Pro case on Amazon https://geni.us/CaPv In this video, we crawl through over 450 listings of GPUs from AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel. The one finding that jumps-out more than anything else is that the most available cards at the closest prices to MSRP are 8GB models, particularly when higher capacity models of the same GPU exist. This further reinforces that MSRP is no longer a reliable metric in GPU reviews (right now, at least) for even baseline comparisons of value. This type of research is limited in scope by nature as even just trying to capture one market accurately required documenting 3 major retailers for hundreds of listings, which took a lot of time to do. Prices will also change with time, making it difficult to keep track of. Still, we wanted to try and better understand what's going on, the best value video cards right now by proximity to MSRP, and which graphics cards people aren't buying. It's ridiculous that 4k gaming isn't the norm in 2025 when you consider 1080p is ancient in technology terms, but that's corporate greed for you. Also, I'm not spending $3000 for a GPU that consumes over 600 Watts of power. I don't want to build a PC that needs a 1000W PSU. I don't want to plug any device in my home that pulls almost 1KW unless it's in my garage and I don't game in my garage. I believe Apple is on the right track because if you read up on superconductors, they won't be around in our lifetimes if ever. I refuse to pay the insane prices for GPUs to game in 4K and I'm also not spending $400.00 to $500 to game in 1080p; I'll just buy a used GPU to game in 1080p. The PC gaming industry is a mess, so I'm just waiting for the next PlayStation or XBOX and Apple. Nvidia is doing with their GPUs what Intel did with their CPUs from 2011- 2017 until Ryzen came out and that was to charge insane prices for marginal performance gains. This is what happens when their is no competition. I was running my PC up until 2017 with an i7-3770 because the gains of Intel's newer CPUs were so putrid. I upgraded later in 2017 when Ryzen came out.

I tried to start up the latest DOOM game a few months back and got the dreaded Error, this game requires more than 8GB VRAM to start up message. That was the first moment I have had where I realized it was time to replace the old 1660 Super. I couldn't even imagine how frustrated I would be seeing this same error on my BRAND NEW 2025 Graphics card, what a JOKE! Owning my 1660 Super and seeing this error message has thankfully taught me to look for 24GB of VRAM when purchasing my next card, even without these wonderful consumer protection videos. Seeing that error message on my PC, makes it hit way harder than hearing a story about someone getting this error. It is not REALLY and error even, it is more a MESSAGE from developers that they expect 16GB at the very least when designing games in 2025.

I said it when the scalping epidemic was at it's height and I think it applies here as well... There's something rather sad about how the top gaming rig of the 2030s, will be a nuc no bigger than a box of tissue paper. The dGPU market for gamers collapsing from a combination of outrageous pricing and stripped necessary features. Instead of addressing it and giving us affordable full-fat cards again, the big brands just, _stop._ Seeing only that they stopped selling instead of the _why_ that they stopped. dGPUs become exclusively limited to the realm of professional rendering rigs, A.I. farms, Times Square billboards and the like such as Quadro (now the A-series) and LUMA, whilst iGPU development begins squeezing as much as they could from what little of Moore's law remains.

So glad I bit the bullet a few years ago and spent up for a RX 6800. Got it at $370 in 2023, which was a steal at the time. I had been eyeing both 6700 and 6700XT for between $50 - $100 less, but the 16gbs of vram vs 10/12 within close pricing made it too good to pass up knowing how it'll add to its lifespan. Been so happy with the performance so far. Other cards from the same era from Nvidia are technically about as powerful, but their limited vram is what is cutting them short. It's just time that 12gbs was the minimum in anything and 16gbs was really more the standard. These 8gb cards are basically ewaste in 2025

AMD needs reference cards at MSRP, reasonably available. Then they could believe, now they just look like a bunch of liars no different than Nvidia. The spread now between AMD and Nvidia is at a point that Nvidia will walk away with market share, exact opposite of what AMD indicated was their goal for 9000 series, seems like more lies from AMD. If Nvidia is supplying 92% of the market in 2025, AMD not having tons of cards available then it was disingenuous what AMD indicated about their goals with market share. If AMD was serious about market share, then there should be AMD cards everywhere at MSRP and above.

I don't know why GPU ram pricing is incredibly high in price when every other type of memory now is dirt cheap. There is definitely a scam going on and you are paying a RAM tax on video cards. Honestly, this should be brought massively to the FTC and to the attention of politicians that could care so that this can be really investigated. I think there would be a huge case of fraud and market manipulation here and the gov should intervene. Why Well the gov also needs to buy machines for lots of reasons. They might be overpaying big time and are totally disconnected to the situation.

Nobody seems to be mentioning how this is going to look going forward. Do we have reason to expect a price crash in the future Is this a repeat of the 30 series, where top prices were in June of 2022 (IIRC) Or is this here to stay Will there be manufactured shortages for the foreseeable future Or third option: is this Nvidia's Intel moment Has Nvidia been been neglecting upgrades and overcharging long enough that competitors will swoop in and trash Nvidia's market share, just like AMD is doing to Intel on the CPU side

While we all hate the price of these cards, I don't really get the MSRP hate. The MSRP is clearly a lie (or marketing as it is best known), and they produce enough cards to satisfy some regulation that allow them to maintain the idea of that MSRP. I am not from the US - so perhaps I am missing something, but apart from reviewers - who cares about MSRP As a consumer I have to pay whatever the store wants, not matter what the MSRP.
Would it be prudent to add 30% to the MSRP when reviewing the cards

I bought a pc with a 1660 super and ryzen 5 back in 2021 for around 800 bucks. A year ago I checked the price of graphics card and you can imagine my astonishment when I discover that the prebuilt pc I bought 4 years ago has actually increased in value. I doubt its still there in value now but I was genuinely surprised that I could sell my GPU and recoup half the cost of my pc. That 1660 super is still running like a champ, might need to upgrade it next year though, hell divers 2 makes it loud

No upgrades anytime soon.
I mean..
Get scammed by GPU maker (Nvidia and their ROPs or whatever)
Get scammed by vendor
Get scammed by game devs \ publishers
Get ads everywhere in a game you paid $90 for
Get the additional DLC for $30
Get new ads
Get battlepass for $20
Get some more new ads
Get the skins $5 each
Get the new game
While the prices of homes and cars are where they are Oh nonono.
This insults me and I don't want to feed it.

The cheapest 5070TI in my country (EU) is for USD 1000 with tax (GAINWARD) - the most expensive ASUS ROG costs USD 1400. Median price of all 5070TI avaialble right now is USD 1150.
The cheapest 5080 in my country is for USD 1350 with tax (PALIT ) - the most expensive ASUS ROG, ASUS TUF AND GB AOURUS costs USD 1820. Median price of all 5080 avaialble right now is USD 1530.
#sadfact the cheapest 5080 is USD 50 CHEAPER THAN THE MOST EXPENSIVE 5070TI ASUS ROG :D

I decided to build a new PC at the literal worst time. By complete coincidence the new Nvidia 50 series came out. As soon as they were scalped out, all the high end XTX cards also got scalped out. I was replacing a PC that originally had a GTX 980 that got RMA'ed and a GTX 1070 came back. I'm still using the 1070 in an otherwise monstrous PC.
At what point does someone take the manufacturers to court for these intentionally price increasing practices

I find your cadence hard to follow. Your videos are packed with well researched content but find your delivery is too fast It can make your points feel congested and hard for an audience to process. Just slow down your delivery, take time for the audience to parse your information. This isn't Tik Tok. Alec at technology connections has very dense videos that I'm happy to sit through and he has much slower delivery. Might just be me.

Here in South Africa. Just looked now. The Palit GamingPro RTX5080 (their most stock card) is R21500, incl VAT (15% sales tax). That translates to R18695 pre-tax. At current exhange rate it is $1062 USD. Also we have import duties that I have no idea what it should be, but I know they exist. I am used to just adding 20-35% onto US pricing (that excludes sales TAX) to get the estimated local price of something (that includes tax).

Well the part I do disagree with is that the 5060 8GB is made for SIs. I think SIs demanded an even cheaper card thus why the 5050 exists. I am hoping the 5060 8GB just dies while yes the 5050 is a 8GB card if I am correct and it is made for cheap prebuilts no gamer computer should get one in it but the cheap it is made as a client in a server-client environment computer. As in my mind that is how bad the card is.
reply

Thank God. It's pretty ridiculous that 8GB cards are still manufactured to be called gaming cards. If people wanted an 8GB card, they could get one of the 8GB cards used from several generations. the 900, 1000, 2000, and 3000 series cards all had 8GB cards. And let's face it, the days of AMD/NVidia selling us cards below $300 is dead. So might as well let anyone who can't get a current gen card buy used.

Good! Cards that are this anti-future-proof should be collecting dust in warehouses! Seriously, Nvidia stop that crap - first you shrank the RAM and then you shrank the BUS that connects the RAM to the rest of the card, so not only do you have less RAM, you can also fill it less easily! Yes, you trick with software, but frankly it's still cards that are about as future proof yesterday's newspaper!

Nah I think they made 8gb version to upsell their 16gb variants so they can sell it above their MSRP. Just like how apple does this with their lineup every where. The Pro exists to upsell the Pro Max. Nvidia just does this to an absurd level because they have leverage over all AIB manufacturers and retails stores becuase they have a commanding lead or nearly monopolistic GPU marketshares.
