1 year ago I squatted legs wide and toes out and my technique was good but after maybe 3 leg days whit squatting (I was new to the gym) I had a unbearable pain in both my knees that took 2 month to not constantly hurt and 6 month before I could do legs again whit out feeling any pain in my knees. I honesty gave up squatting but one day I met this really cool pt at my gym who I explained my problem to and he says -yeah just have you-re toes pointing straight forward and don-t stand wide about shoulder wide- I-m trying this now for the first time and we-ll see how it goes, any tips how I can avoid knee injury in the future.

I'm 6' tall with (in my opinion) long femurs, and have always had a VERY much stronger deadlift than my squat max. What am I doing wrong? Sqauts should be your heaviest compound lift, but mine is almost equal to my best bench press max. my deadlift max is extraordinary because I'm using mostly my back and utilizing very little of my legs. I want massive legs. I have massive glutes and mediocre quads, but zero hamstrings. it's asthesticaly ugly. I'm trying to draw a connection in my squat technique. Paul

But there's also different variations of squats. you can do sumo squats that has a really wide stance, pile squats really wide stance, simple squats narrow squats narrow stance. So you're saying that if we're doing these purposely to work certain muscles that's not safe? I know as well, as you that doing pile squats and sumo squats can work your adductors, which is very important! I've learned that from you-. I'm really confused can you elaborate pretty please?

I used to squat with a wider stance for years and it never felt comfortable. My working sets would always feel unstable. One night I watch a video of Tom Platz squatting using a narrower stance with toes out and thought I-d give it a try. What a difference! Movement actually feels natural, fluid and stable and power now goes through heels instead of all over the place so I guess it-s trial and error for everyone out there.

I have osteoarthritis in both hips, so it's very painful to do any type of lower body lifting. Recently, I have found a way to squat where it doesn't hurt nearly as bad at all. With my feet and toes pointed out naturally, all the weight is going towards the areas it should, relieving so much stress off my hips. I found this video very helpful and it confirms the way I'm squatting with the osteoarthritis.

Real late to the party here but great vid. I tried for years and years to squat more narrow and used to get horrendous retropatellar knee pain and had great difficulty reaching depth and usually had to stop a couple inches above parallel. I learned I HAD to squat with a wider stance or face some bad consequences. Ya, it's all about how your hips and femurs are shaped.

I struggled with squats inside the cage. Then I watched this this video and understood why I could do bodyweight deep squats but could hardly squat any weight. Then I tried deep squats again without the cage, legs wider than shoulder width and toes at 45 degrees: I squatted heavier than ever before. Awesome.

Amazing video and this will change my approach to squatting for the rest of my life and also has given me a desire to do mobility and stretching exercises.
Thumbs up to one of the best videos I've seen on YT so far on training the squat. I really cannot understand the dislikes?

Jeff, would a good indication of what you've explained be your tracks made when walking on soft ground/sand? Like when I look back at my footprints in sand I see my tracks with the toes pointed a fair way out. I find it uncomfortable to walk when my toes are consciencely pulled in.
