Before we start I will tell you that all of the backstroke starts of this video are illegal. They are illegal because we put our feet on the ledge of the pool, but since we dont have a backstroke ledge or a touch pad, the wall is too slippery and this is the only way we can practice them. You can practice this way too, if you dont have those things and the wall is slippery. If found this webpage where you can buy backstroke wedges: Make sure to practice this start very often. If you dont have the means to practice it in your pool make sure to do it during meet warm ups, enough to feel confident about it. We have been sending our swimming caps all over the world, from Brazil to South Korea. If you want yours

I don't know what that girl at the end was thinking! Reminds me of the swimmers in public swimming sessions.
Do you have any tips for starting off regular pads (no wedges, as they aren't usually available in competitions? I used to have a reasonable start, but I'm older and heavier than I used to be, and now I can't pull myself completely out of the water. The higher I try to get, the more chance there seems to be of my feet slipping as I push. Should I bend my legs more and get my hips closer to the wall, or bend my legs less and try to keep my hips away from the wall, during the setup? Also, I find looking up helps keep my feet planted. Do you have links to pictures/videos that demonstrate the best form, or is it down to experimenting with what works for me?

I always struggle with the backstroke start. Also I have never practiced it this way (illegally. Oh well, I will have to wait for our pool to be set up with starting blocks as we are now in long course season.
