Shoulder Pain With Planks? TRY THIS! Planks are a basic, but fundamental core move. They are a great way to establish that mind-body connection and really focus on what you feel working. They are a great anti-extension and ant-flexion movement so you learn how to brace. But what if you have shoulder aches and pains that don-t allow you to do even a modified version of the plank? What can you do to still get the amazing core benefit of a plank in a way that allows you to work around your pain? Before I go into one of my favorite core isometrics to use to modify the plank around shoulder pain, I want to discuss a key tip to help you modify any moves you find don-t fit your needs or goals. Because it can feel overwhelming to come up with variations when you-re injured or need to regress a move to get more out of it!

I have a 55 lb red heeler who pulls despite me having bought a anti-pull harness. He's also surprisingly strong. I have developed a bit of soreness in the shoulder of the arm that I hold onto his leash with. So I appreciate this. I like doing planks. I have a slight problem with focusing so much on maintaining my posture during the plank that I also hold my breath. Any advice on how to stop myself from doing that would be helpful. -

Love your videos! The issue here is that planks have absolutely not the same biomechanics than the -banana hold- which can very easily lead to bulge of the abdomen, something hard to avoid if you stay long in that position. For instance some people are able to keep the plank position for hours but it is almost impossible to keep the second one more than few minutes especially if you have long legs.

Corey, thank you so much for these plank alternatives (and great info. I-ve wanted to ask this same question for quite some time and just haven-t done it. I-ve had frozen shoulder, bursitis and impingement as well as rotator surgery on one side. I am doing great now, but over a few years would just keep reaggrivating it when I work out. I think these will be good options to try -

This is good to know, I had shoulder pain earlier this year which didn't allow. e to do planks, so ended up going to physical therapy to help release the tension in my shoulder. Wish I would have known this before. Could have done this move in place of planks until my shoulder was better. But now my shoulder is back in good shape and can do planks again -

I absolutely love your redefining strength info clips. I'm nearly 52 yrs old and use to be 100kg and am now 59kg. Stomach surgery and hard work at the gym has led me to a strong and healthy life. Question on roll calf muscle. I have pulled it and want some information on how to relieve it and what exercises to do to help it. Thank you -

Thank you so much. This is the first time I have found ANYTHING on plank substitutes. I suffer horribly with - frozen shoulder- off & on for 3 years now. I had given up on exercise completely. You use your shoulders in so many movements. It-s hard to find any that don-t incorporate your shoulder in one way, or another. Thanks again!

I think doing the plank on my elbows and doing pushups had a lot to do with why I developed biceps tendinitis and put me on the sidelines for weeks. Now I just do mountain climbers, sometimes with a half BOSU ball turned upside down. Don't do pushups, elbow planks, military press or barbell bench press now.

Cory,
Saw you in Hinge Health. For me, Hinge Health-s creditably went up.
Planks are part of my AM core strength and stretch time. On different days I use different variations.
You continue to teach and inspire me.
Thank you!

Love your videos, I always learn from you. I need a modification for forward lunges. Suffering with tibial pain. Hip flexor pain, bursitis pain. Still training and trying to work through it.
