Leiden is wonderful.
Lived there for 24 years and probably will move there again for my final years.
The interesting stuff is in walking distance from the train station, so if you're staying in Amsterdam do take the train.
Make sure you visit the _Burcht_. Somewhat hidden, it's the remains of a citadel on a hill. You have a wonderful view on the old city and it's a perfect spot for taking pictures.
Oh, and it's free of charge!

Any local will only be too pleased to take you there and tell you all about it.

I find Passau to be the definition of the German hidden gem. The view of the town from a distance at night is magical and when you get to the town itself, it look even better!
Also off the top of my head, I have fond memories of the couple of times I went to Guerande, Brittany/Pays de la Loire. Very small medieval town and a bit out of the way (in the St Nazaire area) but there's a national park next door and a popular seaside resort (La Baule) just a few km away. And a lot of history.

Have you ever been to Potsdam? It's a place where nearly every European culture is represented in a city located on a river island. Here you can find Italian architecture, baroque palaces (there are 17 palaces, a dutch city quarter, English gardens and cottages, mosques (with a different function btw, lots of nature, a small Russian village in the middle of the town etc. I think this might be an interesting place for you.

I would recommend Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic. Jaw-dropping architecture, hot springs beneath the River Tepla, stretches of which steam. You can drink the waters from the ornamental taps located along the riverside in the old town. Beautiful location in a valley.

I loved Ypres when I went there. Plus in the UK at least we learn about WW1 just as much as WW2, I assume that in the USA that you learn less about WW1 because the US were less involved in the war whereas they played a major role in WW2 so therefore learn more about it.

Mark, have you been to Lindau on the Bodensee? There are so many nice towns in that area it is hard to pin one down in Swabia. There are so many nice places there, but you would have to do some investigating to find museums and such to make a day of it.

there are so many great hidden towns. I have actually 2 different hidden towns/gems videos and probably will make another video in November in Germany in Cochem with another 10 hidden towns, will research your towns too. thanks!

Bruges is hardly off the beaten track - it's now over-touristed and expensive.
Also, the Historic Sausage Kitchen by the old Stone Bridge in Regensburg is medieval, not Roman. It's old, but not that old.

I went to Bruges last year, beautiful! I advise going during the many cultural festivals, you really will enjoy the music through the streets and the amazing canal system!
