Greensboro Airport - Piedmont Triad International - GSO

In this video, let's explore my home airport. As the unofficial YouTuber of Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO, I consider myself qualified to take you on a tour of the facility. Greensboro is part of the Piedmont Triad which includes the cities of Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point. Our airports code is GSO, but its called PTI or Piedmont Triad International Airport to reflect its central location in between these three cities. A lot of people just call it the Greensboro Airport. Its admittedly confusing and even inspired an attempted name change a few years back that didnt take. It was to be called North Carolina Central International Airport. Turned out that was even more confusing, so its still GSO a/k/a PTI. Would you believe more than 6, 000 people work on the campus! There's a lot more to Piedmont Triad International Airport - and pretty much any airport - than ticket counters, gates, and jetbridges. Airports are micro-communities with all kinds of interesting things going on. This video explores a bit of what's going on at Piedmont Triad International

GSO/PTI never really got the shine it deserved. Given how G'boro and Winston-Salem used to be the premiere cities in North Carolina - Greensboro used to be the second-largest city in the state for one thing, and Winston-Salem had a lot of major banking HQs before Charlotte did plus Piedmont was HQd in Winston Salem AND the tobacco company HQs before smoking became out of fashion - it makes me think about the missed potential there, but Raleigh-Durham Triangle began to start overshadowing the Triad back in the 80s and the rest is history.

I live in the Upstate of SC just to your south a bit, and Greenville/Spartanburg Intl (GSP) is my home airport. I cant tell you how many times gate agents at airports such as Baltimore, Philadelphia, or Chicago Midway have mispronounced Greenville as Greensville/Spartanburg or even Greensville/Spartansburg. (Bless their hearts) I guess they get it confused with Greensboro.

Great to see so much business going on on a rather small airport. My hometown airport (Groningen airport, The Netherlands) is way smaller and currently it only has charter operations to holiday destination around the Mediterranean Sea. Id love to see regular (feeder) flights to destinations like London, Paris, Copenhagen or Munich from my little hometown airport: )

The 10, 000 foot runway makes PTI a B-52 bomber capable facility and is used, like ILM Wilmington, for Air Force One touch and go practice. FedEx was going to move its main hub to PTI and close its Memphis hub, but that plan was put on hold years ago. ILM was also an emergency landing site for the space shuttle program and another cold war era B-52 rated field.

Although I'm a native of Tampa, Florida, GSO and I go a long way back. I fondly remember the days when Eastern and Delta both flew DC-9's and 727's, Piedmont flew 737's and GSO had its own airline, Bluebell (Wrangler) that flew CL-44 cargo turboprops to the Caribbean. I hope to be near GSO next week when I visit kin in Lexington. Thanks for GSO on the map!

It takes about 10 minutes for me to drive to PTI from my home in Summerfield NC. Despite the fact that a trip from GSO almost always involves a connection, there are many advantages to flying into and out of an airport such as this. I have had some really funny, unique and interesting experiences there which I can share if you are so interested.

It's interesting which airports are good and which aren't. I tend to find meet ones are better as the older ones have need constantly added to in a haphazard manor.
I'm a big fan of Billund airport in Denmark, and although I haven't been yet, Doncaster airport in the UK is supposed to be very nice.

Neat video. Im in Martinsville and my first flight was around 1980 when I was a kid. It was in the old terminal that is now the TH Davis Aviation Center (Im looking for pics of this facility in operation before current PTI was built. I always fly PTI!

Hey Jeb, have you ever flown out of Concord-Padgett? I live in Thomasville, almost directly between the 2. I am 30 minutes from PTI and 45 minutes from Concord. Just curious if you have been to both which you think is better.

You should check out the podcast Opposing Bases. They are 2 controllers based at PTI and talk about their experience flying and controlling at the airport. Maybe they could get you some good connections!

My Home Airport is Atlantic City International. What sucks is that it is only serviced by Spirit lol. To do any other airline I got to go to Philadelphia or Newark lmao

Hey Jeb, have they fixed the HORRENDOUS speed bump on taxiway delta between the two parallel runways? I thought I damage the lander gear taxing over that one day.
reply

I live an hour away from there but I've never flown out of there because Southwest is the airline I use. RDU is my closest Southwest airport 2 hours away.

I got to visit Haeco when it was Timco (2004ish. They had a 777 in for maintenance at the time and we were able to go on board and check out the cockpit.

My home airport is JFK but LGA is where my heart is. I know its still considered sort of major but it definitely doesnt get enough love in my opinion.

The Aeromexico lounge at San Antonio MUST be the smallest lounge in all of the United States. At least, its the smallest I've ever been to.

Flew out of GSO a couple months ago. The most friendly TSA agents Ive ever encountered. It was great! LGA could take some lessons

Any way to find all direct routes out of GSO? I am a frequent flyer and have to drive to CLT or RDU for most of my flights.
