Onboard the Worlds Most NOTORIOUS Airline: LION AIR Melvin: I did a domestic flight on Garuda from Jakarta a few years back. After checking in and spending some time in the lounge, I realised I couldnt find my boarding pass. I waved my travel companion ahead to go to the gate while I went back to the check in counter.
The check in people didnt really check my ID. They did look at my tax card, which was NOT a photo ID, and just issued me a new boarding pass.
In actual fact, my boarding pass was not missing. It was actually with my friend. I had actually lost HIS boarding pass. However, he had boarded the flight with my original boarding pass without realising it. Airport security didnt check while letting him board. Then when I came by to the gate, they scanned my new boarding pass and the machine protested that I had already boarded (which I technically had. After a few more scans and a few more bloops from the machine, security waved me on board anyway.
So now there were two of me on board while my friend was a no show. An airline employee came on the flight before take off to call out for my friend. All he had to do was raise his hand to satisfy them. No further checks were needed. So yeah, security at Jakarta airport isnt the tightest around!

thats the product of our ex-president projects with mister obama at that times.
lion air is the brainchild of corruptions and scandals.
involving 600mil USD deals, and that case not yet solved or some people put in somewhere under their bed LOL
not only the ex-big bro stolen money from the airplane tenders, the compensations money for the victims who died on plane crashed was stolen by religion NGO who acts as donations distribution. they bought new cars, new houses, and got many new wife, and donating the money for their future. smart.
its not bad flying with lion air, at least its a relatively new planes. maybe never maintenance but many people drive cars that never got maintenance too LOL
there are worst airlines than lion air in here.
corruptions always brings misery

I always call Lion air as mikrolet terbang, mikrolet are cheap transport service that used MVP car like Toyota kijang or Suzuki carry, it was bad, the driver are notorious they only know which one is the gas pedal, and cramped!
We are literaly sitting with our knee almost touching the other person knee in front of you. If you are unlucky the driver usually only start driving when the car were packed like a tuna can. but their service is better know because online service like grab & gojek (our version of Uber) taking lots of their costumer away because of their better service and they are forced to step up their game.

Yeah, I have experience too with this airplane when for me this airplane have a predicate the most king of delayed because I ever been delayed 3 hours and I just accept a bottle of mineral water for their responsibility. In the cabin so very hot until we take-off to the air.
But for JT 610 I think we can't blame the airplane company because on that time Boeing 737 Max 8 were in trouble of the instrument on the cabin. Not only Lion Air JT 610 crash, also Ethiopia Airlines crash months later.

a few years ago my wife and i were in indonesia and flew lion air. as the plane touched down, people removed their seat belts. stood up and removed their bags from the overhead lockers. we were travelling at 200km/h down the main runway. we slowed to get off the main runway and people were standing in the aisle waiting to get off. the cabin crew did / said nothing. it was as if the passengers were on a local BUS and were getting off at the next village. SAFETY, WHAT SAFETY?

Hey Noel! I did BKK to YGN on MAI last weekend. Cheap, full beverage service but planes old. But no complaints. My regional favourite is Nok Air. I just love the livery of the planes with bird beaks nok meaning bird in Thai. Cheap, clean and good prices. The urban story, not sure it; s a myth, is that the flight attendants are made redundant when they reach age 24! A bit different to Qantas. They don't have a chance of working internationally until 45 plus and 25kg overweight!

To be fair to Lion Air the Lion Air flight 610 crash was due entirely to the Boeing 737 Max MCAS system which caused the crash as well as the following crash by Ethiopian flight 302 a few months later. It was NOT caused by inadequate maintenance or pilot inexperience. It was caused by Boeing - full stop! Boeing tried to cover up their failure before they were finally forced ground the new airliner. This was the most horrendous cover up ever!

from my experience, I definitely hate lion air the most because of their delay, their service, bad safety. I recommend fly with citilink, airasia, or garuda. they're more expensive than lion air and I don't mind that. I've taken flights with citilink many times and it was good experience. the check-in was good and service was kind. it's definitely a choice if you want a safe and cheap flights.

Soekarno-Hatta is truly a beautiful terminal, however the boarding process is a total logistical mess.
Noel, you should fly out of HLP in Jakarta to experience true insanity. There are some amazing food outlets in the departure lounge, though.
I'd love to see you fly into Medan in the future, too (KNO)

well I was flying their a330 on several Haj flights from Dakar and Banjul to Jeddah. I can't sign that and I am not only a pilot but also a flight engineer. They might have had crashes but I would not call their planes unsafe. What I would say is that their pilots are maybe not that well trained.

Its bizarre when a plane crashes and they change the number. I remember taking the morning 757 flight on American from IAD to LAX. It was in about 2010 and the flight number was American 76, it left from the same gate on the same route and schedule as one of the planes on 9/11: American 77.

Lion air have had 3 accidents, and only 2 with deaths. One of them, which involved Boeing 737 MAX caused by a combination of design flaws of Boeing and that pilot were not trained for 737 MAX as Boeing again sell as the same plane, and not further training was required

I find all the budget south east asia airlines to be great! Until they crash. Luckily they have so many flights the probability of actually dying is low-ish. Certainly a lower probability than driving in a car in Thailand, or probably anywhere for that mater.

I have started to doubt the notoriety of the Lion Air after the Boeing 737 Max crash. initially all the blame was placed on the crew and the airline. This was a coverup which was exposed after the Ethiopian Airline Crash leading to revisiting of the case

I have flown this airline many times since 2006, i havent got serious issues regarding safety unless its panctuality, Lion its only private owned airline that having a lot connecting hub around Indonesia island. Hopefully its getting better in the future.

As someone with an accounting and statistical background I can confirm re 10 crashes over 20 years is alarming but of more immediate concern is no crashes in the last 3 years is statistically dangerous in the context re due for another crash soon lol

If you fly here often, start recording all the landings - Indo pilots do like to slam it onto the tarmac, bounce a few time and then get on the brakes - the worst part of most flights here by far. Lion at least has newer planes. Go on Batik / SriWijaya
reply

they should change the company name because lion is strange name for an aviation company and indonesians people believe wrong name and logo can bring bad luck, that's why a lot of big companies in indonesia change their name and logo several times.

2: 24 Having been to Indonesia nearly a dozen times, I can tell you that your impression of the airport is just as apt as an analogy for the country writ-large. Sheer chaos, with moments of absolute peace and serenity.

The only time I ever was scared on a plane was with Thai Lion air between Bangkok and Yangon, the plane did a massive drop and I saw the face of the stewardess and she definitely was scared.
