Dealing With Black Bears in the Woods Dale: Good advice. I work in the wild around bears and have lost track of how many bear encounters both night and day. It is really hard not to run away the first time. Adrenaline takes over. Totally understand that. When we are working, we are hyper aware of the environment examining foot prints and scat to know how many, how large, and how well-fed. The best advice is to NEVER be immersed in music, listening to the environment sounds enhances your wild experience and keeps you safe. Bears are rarely seen without hearing (or smelling) them first. Bears tend to smell like dirty wet dogs. Also bears love to eat grubs from logs, those large claws are designed to tear rotting logs apart -- at night you can hear them chowing down on log grubs. Watch for fresh torn up logs. Bear scat is mostly wood pulp with hair (from grooming) and occasional candy wrappers as you get closer to civilization. So take food safety seriously. New crew members often take home souvenir coolers with tooth or claw marks from poor management (guilty as well. When I do have an encounter, I try to be a study in indifference. I don't take photos because I don't want to draw attention. My goal is to have a boring encounter, not later bragging rights as I show off my scars. Excellent post, thank you for sharing.

my Native friends 500 miles north of Vermont told me that black bears are the reincarnated souls of their ancestors And that if you are a person who has resolved issues in your life with violence, the bear is going to walk out of the woods and slap the shit out of you.
When I lived up there deep in the bush, I had quite a few encounters with black bears.
Old bears, solitary bears, momma bears with kids, teenage frisky young bears who were more funny than charlie chaplin, all kinds.
My friends up there thought I was nuts and always offered to lend me guns and rifles.
No thanks.
When you go into the bush, your heart must be pure.
Like an animal.
I live in the woods now in Canada just across the border from Vermont and walk 8 miles through bear trails to get to town. People think I am weird or slightly crazy, and I just smile and say nothing: )

If you get attacked by a black bear, fight with all your might. I'm sorry folks, but this is bad advice. Nobody has to tell anybody to fight back. There is something in humans called self-preservation which is the will to live. Believe me, YOU WILL FIGHT BACK. You will also be screaming and calling out to God. And this is a fight for your life. You'll either survive, or become a bears lunch. In some cases, fighting back worked. But in other cases, fighting back didn't work.
GOOD ADVICE: carry 2 or three canisters of bear spray with you to prevent the situation from getting that far. Also, what makes you think you're survive an attack by a bear who stands 8 to 10 feet tall and weighs about 500lbs?

Funny story! Its good to point out what NOT to do! It was good you had a bunch of friends. There's safety in numbers. I carry a stout hiking stick, a 6 buck knife on my belt, and a neck knife as a last resort. I have carried a pistol when I did longer hikes, or was camping up in the state forest for a longer period of time solo, doing day hikes, and returning to my camping area after the hike. Fortunately, I never had to fight a bear or shoot one. However, I won't go into the state forest in a remote area unarmed. There could be 2 legged animals to be concerned about too.

The comment she made about not needing bear spray is insane. I don't care how lethal or nonlethal a bear is, you should always carry bear spray with you. Yes, you can extent your arms and hold you ground, and in most cases this technique works. but there are exception''s to this rule. One of these days she may encounter a bear who doesn't give a rip about how brave or unintimidated she is, and she will become a statistic. Not that I want that to happen. I hope I'm wrong. But you just can't take any chances when it comes to these bears.

Great video! I have been lucky enough to encounter three black bears over the years. The first was from my car while driving into the backcountry. The second was from the safety of my canoe (although bears can swim. The third was the coolest. I was hiking along a portage trail in Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario Canada, and suddenly there was this noise about 30 metres from me. The bear must have just heard me coming and it took off like a canon ball through the forest. It is really neat seeing a bear in the wild.

So this comment is during COVID and the demonstrations et al. it is SOOOOO cool to listen to you talk about bears, and YOUR first hand experience, you're a seasoned hiker! Instead of all the crap going on in the news here. Can't wait to get back out there and at night be like. wht's that noise! kidding. sort of.

When I was 14 on a boy scout hike I rounded a corner and there was a black bear headed in my direction. I jumped and yelled out in surprise. The bear also jumped, then turned tail and ran. I must've scared the poor guy lmao but he damn near made me piss myself

At a distance where you can see hairs, that is about the distance of a stair case. The distance that you travel foward on an average stair case is roughly the distance. I used a wall mounted black hair rug as reference so this isn't random guess.

Monthly cycle will attract black bears. Told nicking in Canada to make yourself look bigger. Do not run. If bear attacks cover head tuck yourself. Bear will drag you and they burry their food to rot. They will come back days later to feed.
