Suggestion: What to look for in your backpacking gear. It would be super helpful to have a list of things you may want to consider when choosing a tent, a sleeping bag, a backpack, clothes, etc. For someone just starting out, a general checklist is probably more useful than reviews of specific ultralight (and ultra-expensive) gear that a beginner may not want to buy. Once you know what you are looking for, you can go out and see whether there is an affordable option that does everything you want it to do.
(Example: I really liked the video where you compared an expensive tent to a cheap one because you pointed out so many details that might be important, like ventilation or whether you have to climb over another person to leave the tent. Even though the video compared two specific tents, I took a lot of great general tips from it. Another example would be videos where people talk about the general differences between down and synthetic jackets as opposed to reviewing one specific jacket)

I don't exactly know how to word this question. I am just going to throw this out there and see if anyone can help me. I have never backpacked ( 70 years old) but this seems really interesting to me. Over the last 6 months I have watched many videos. I wish the videos covered 2 subjects better or maybe I don't know how to search. How do you know where the trail is? How do you not get lost when it seems to disappear? Also. I wish the videos would show more detail about what is done once the campsite is chosen. Tent, eating, changing clothes, bedding, sleeping, pooping, etc. If you can direct me to YouTube's that cover these subjects I sure would be thankful.

Awesome video. nice to meet you Dixie. I love to go hiking for the day or perhaps over night hiking, but I want to learn more about Backpacking as well, because I never tried it, and didn't really know or understand the significant differences with camping and being a day hiker and that sort of thing, so explanations and preparing ones self for a back packing trip or length of what is considered a back packing trip would greatly be appreciated, thank you so much for creating this new series, and I will be watching, connection already made, cheers.

My mom is sooo opposed to me solo hiking, let alone solo backpacking! do you have tips on talking to loved ones about your plans to go on a solo trip? i bet it was quite the conversation when you told your family about your AT plans. all your videos so far have been so helpful and inspiring, I find that this is my number 1 fear. even though I'm 30 I'm still scared to talk to my mom about this!
also, more practical: how do you identify the perfect camp spot?

I've said it before and will probably say it again, but your vlogs are absolutely outstanding! All I've done is hike up to the summit of Whitney a couple of times and that was a long time ago. Now I'm finally returning to the Eastern Sierra I love for more camping and hiking. My debate at the moment is between section hiking the JMT or section hiking. Thanks for all you share. I am very much looking forward to a step by step, starting at the beginning course from you, Dixie. Like so many here I feel like I've learned a great many useful things about this subject thanks to all you've shared with us, but I believe the approach you are proposing to follow will really help firm up gaps in my knowledge. Thanks so much!

Im interested in seeing some leave no trace methods, and maybe some things about cleaning cookware after use and keeping it clean for a long period of time for something like a long thru hike.

Love your videos! Do you have any rules of thumb for calories per day you need? I get that winter is cold and summer is hot. Going uphill is harder than level or downhill. That being said.
