2025 Land Cruiser vs Ineos Grenadier Review - Battle Of The Off-Road Boxes!

In this face off we test Toyota's new right-sized Land Cruiser (250) and pit it against the Ineos Grenadier, the most old-school SUV you can buy in America today. Which is better off-road Well, that depends on the off-roading you're doing but both are capable enough that I didn't want to risk the paint LOL. So this video is an on-road face-off!

Interesting video. He starts out missing the grenadier point as he keeps looking for electric power options like seats and steering columns. The whole idea is less stuff to break, less electric stuff to get short put when wading. If you want electric motors on everything and a truck you need to trade in every 4 years because a warranty is mandatory to keep that stuff working, go by buy a Defender. If you just want a super comfy, all wheel drive, massage seated, great stereo, family vehicle to tote your kids n’ loads of gear, get a Volvo or big Audi. The Toyota is a fungible good, a commodity, an automotive plain white toaster oven. But when it comes to a vehicle that you WANT to have, that will do Moab with jeeps on 35s, takes 35 tires without mods, fits the dogs in the back (but keeps them in because you can just open the little door, and still picks up adult size teenagers after a track meet, then get a Grenadier. You’ll walk outside every morning and say DANG, that’s a cool truck. Oh, and get the dual battery setup-it has household plug inverters (a middle for the kids & a rear for a 12v fridge full of cold drinks at that track meet) along with pre-wired outside plugs for camp lights or starlink, or roof tents. Also, think Scottish white or magic mushroom colors because they never look dirty, and get the factory dog divider because dogs love the back seat with the windows down, and yes, do get different tires (no cost option) because yeah the duelers suck and are noisy.

Good review. Just a thought to consider on the steering, though.
I don’t think strong self-centering should be assumed as a positive attribute. I learned to drive in a 61 Buick where steering smoothly was the fine art of applying the right amount of friction when the wheel would recenter at about 10, 000rpm! Nobody would ever rate that car above an absolute crap steer. The garage space, prior to my Grenadier, was occupied by an RX8 - universally reviewed as an excellent steer. But it didn’t aggressively center and usually required the driver to do that. Why Because that’s what drivers want in a drivers car.
The Grenadier is no RX8 of course but letting the driver decide where it points seems, at least to me, to be consistent with its design ethos. The driver is always in control like solid axles and lockers instead of some black box traction control choosing to brake wheels. Why want steering that tries to go straight when the driver doesn’t

The Ineos is a curiosity that suits the needs of very few. If I were a rancher or similar who routinely drove unmaintained roads, and didn't live an absurd distance from a dealer, it would be worth considering. It's too big for serious rock crawling, plus doesn't have the aftermarket accessories available for a Wrangler or Bronco, so I can't see any resson to buy it if you're a weekend off-roader.
The Defender was popular in the Third World, especially Africa, but those were simple vehicles. They weren't necessarily reliable, but could be fixed anywhere with basic tools. The Grenadier probably will be tougher, but fixing it won't be so straightforward. The Land Cruiser Prado has long been extremely popular in places the Defender used to be, so parts and mechanics would be much easier to find.
Neither of these suits my urban needs, but if forced I save the money snd aggravation and buy the Toyota (or get a GX.

Grenadier every single day. It’s not boring, it doesn’t have a lackluster drivetrain. Not to mention the grenadier is a lot cooler looking inside and out. And it has touches that you just can’t have on the Land Cruiser
The legend is a joke. The new challenger is a serious contender
Plus nobody’s going to care about reliability or fuel economy at this point
I will say though the lack of power seats and power steering column on the grenadier is a bit odd

The last minute of this video would suggest that the Lexus gx is the better car to compare with the Ineos. My guess is that a very small percentage of Toyota drivers use any of the off road capabilities and a plug in hybrid version would suit the needs of most drivers very well. I think a gx with the tx phev drivetrain would be very nice. I mean for those folks who aren’t planning on taking their luxury suv off road and maybe want to burn less fuel on the way to Costco.

I feel like these are both significantly different enough that customers who are cross shoping would know what they want to get. The Ineos is a more focused vehicle for offroading, at the cost of everyday creature comforts and day to day usability while the Land Cruiser is much much more livable in day to day use

Interior of the Landcruiser is obviously much nicer but I'd take the Grenadier B58ZF drivetrain over the Toyota 4 cylinder any day of the week. The fit and finish of the Grenadier will not be as nice. In truth I wouldn't take either of them- I'd stick with a GX460.

Would’ve been nice if Toyota had put some decent-sized round fogs (rather than the tiny rectangular ones) on the Land Cruiser Land Cruiser model, to break up all the rectilinear graphics up front, and carry over some of the visual appeal of the base model.

Man, you literally have 9-10 bot comments in less than two minutes. What's going on here Regardless, thanks for the video! I'll comment more once I'm done watching it, but I love the Grenadier. If you want a true, hardcore offroader this is it.

Imo LC250's mid-life cycle should make it more offroad-oriented (think more ground clearance and bash-plates, maybe even spare wheel at the rear door) and Grenadier's next gen should be more on-road oriented. Love em both tbh.
reply

Toyota could consult Honda how to make usable interiors, for most of their vehicles.
Sorry to brake your world Toyota, but interior should be usable and it is a deal breaker for me. None of these round shapes carry cargo

Excellent review. I am a little confused, you say the LC has better fuel economy but you indicate in th test it gets 17. 8mpg, whereas the Grenadier got 18mpg
reply

Love my Grenadier both on and off road. Getting just over 20mpg city driving. And yes, I enjoy just driving the speed limit and having a relaxing ride.

I understand the hardwares on the paper. However, I find it hard to believe there will be a trail Granedier conquers that Landcruiser doesn't.
reply

iam buying a rivian over the ineos. why. the bmw long term maintenance issues. and the land cruiser needs a 6cyl. the 4 cyl is just too underpowered.
reply

I still don’t understand why Toyota doesn’t offer a good unibody off-road vehicle.
For these who don’t tow, LC has a lot of downsides.
