We Tested The Sonata Hybrid Solar Roof

Looking to add a little extra green to your nee hybrid sedan? The Sonata hybrid's solar roof isn't as useful as you might hope, but it does have an impact and it is totally cool. Joeys: So this uses a boost converter to charge the traction pack at 400v? I assume the panels in series are about 48v? Probably a 93% efficiency factor. I think the smarter play is to have this run the climate control as areas that have direct sunlight usually have higher interior temps. Running the AC (which can consume 3kw) would immediately destroy any pack gains. If the energy generated, pre-conditioned the cabin based on a setpoint then put the rest of the energy into the pack it would probably be more efficient.

You started the solar test with a completely clean roof, but I can't tell if the final shot has raindrops on it or spots of dirt. I _earnestly_ applaud creativity and bold ideas to implement solar in many aspects of our life like Hyundai is doing, but the cheap plastic covered solar panels of my security and string lights quickly get dirty and hazed and don't perform as well. I wonder what the glass covered solar roof of that car will look like in 2, 4, and 6 years down the road

If you were going to leave the car baking in the sun anyway, maybe, and even then, the return vs. cost probably doesn't make sense. If you weren't going to leave the car baking in the sun, and you end up doing that just to get a couple of hundred watts of power, that is destroying far more of the car (rubber & plastic parts) than what you're getting out of the panels.

I've wondered why Toyota has always been so lame about the use of solar panels, and now as has been for a few years the South Koreans are kicking butt on the other car manufacturer's. This may not produce much but like the hybrid system itself it's a supplement. Perhaps they'll add more to the top of the hood and trunk lid. Good for them

I like the solar panels and how the Sonata figure out a way to monitor the amount of energy you can get from the sun daily. Reading the comments is always interesting. Most of the readers seem to think that this is the first car with solar panels. Toyota came out with solar panels in their Prius almost 10 years ago as an option.

You would be better off setting up the solar panels in a grassy patch next to the parking lot, or as an awning over a few spots, rather than on the car itself. This is only a step below solar roadways in the ranking of terrible (inefficient) places to put solar panels.

Yes but solar roofs should always be connected to low-voltage system. As demand on 12V system is just right for solar roof. If vehicle is in the very hot sun and 12V system is absolutely full system should run HVAC fan as a bonus to keep cabin below 50C for interior longevity.

Is it enough power to run the A/C long enough to cool the interior on a hot day? If you can remote start the car before you leave work on a 100 degree summer afternoon and step into a 72 degree cooled cabin without wasting any fuel, that would be a good feature.

I remember when the Prius had solar panels. It used the Sun's own power to spite it, by running the A/C fans while parked. I look forward to a time when all cars have solar cells to improve on some aspect or another of efficiency, performance, and/or conscience. .

How about economics of it? how much is solar roof adding to the cost of the ca? How much energy could it generate over life span of the car? Would there be any potential return on investment?
