2020 Subaru Outback Review Not Just For Golden Retrievers

Subaru's Outback is proof that the station wagon has a future. The all-new design is still essentially a wagon variant of the 2020 Subaru Legacy, but it's also a practical and capable crossover. Cargo room is competitive, 8. 7 inches of ground clearance will get you over more mountain trails than the Passport without scraping and the more car-like seating position is comfortable on long road trips. Combine that with a shockingly quick 2. 4L turbo for 2020 and I'm just forced to ask one thing of Subaru: where's the XT Sport trim?

5. 7s? Maybe it's possible but for the 0-60mph I'll wait for the times of car and driver and motortrend. the 0-60mph of alex are not realistic in my opinion. For example he said that a kia optima turbo 2016 can do 0-60mph in 5. 9s nobody has managed to get a time close to that. For example motortend who does his tests with a professional driver did not do better than 7. 3s. Alex says that the acura rdx 2019 can do 0-60mph in 5. 7s while the other sites magazines like car and driver and motortrend got times close to 6. 4s. I want to believe alex but when it was asked to show us or film it he did not do. For me 0-60mph will be close to 6. 2-6. 5s that's not bad.

To settle all arguments on the topic: The Outback is very literally a lifted Subaru Legacy Wagon. Its ride height is literally the only difference between the two. Its the same with the Impreza and the Crosstrek. We may not get the Legacy wagon in North America anymore, but it is widely sold around the world. So, despite some people comparing the Outback to SUVs and CUVs. it isnt one. Just like the Volvo Cross Country models, the Buick X Tour, Audi Allroad and Volkswagen Golf Alltrack, this is simply a lifted wagon.

I know it's just basic testing at this point, but 5. 7 seconds 0-60 is very impressive for the class, and a huge improvement for the Outback. The previous generation with the 3. 6 L engine did 0-60 in around 7 seconds, and now the new model is faster than the Honda Passport which has been getting tons of praise in reviews. Good on Subaru for fixing the logic in their CVT, if this engine holds up in terms of reliability it'll be a grand slam.

I Wish it had a normal transmission. TFL couldn't get it up a dirt hill, the car cut power so the tranny wouldn't get damaged. A car shouldn't have to protect the transmission like that. If the factory doesn't trust the transmission, I don't trust it either. Otherwise it's a great car, if it had a normal tranny I would consider it.

Hi Alex. Does this have the start stop system that cant be turned off like Forester? I drove the 19 forester as I was getting some work done at the dealer and there was no way to miss it. I didnt like it that there is no button to turn it off. I didnt stall on an intersection but I do wonder how these will age after 10 years.

I really wish I could get the turbo engine on the sport trim of the legacy and lower cost trim of the outback. I don't need any of the extraneous and expensive features of the XT trims. The sport trim is perfect, I'd rather spend more for the turbo engine and nothing else.

Nice review. I am so glad Subaru did not include those awful white blocks on the door and dash that the Ascent has. The turbo will be great, but many Ascent owners complain they are not getting the advertised mileage. The Outback has some nice improvements.

I like Wagon A much maligned style. I just wish that Subaru moved to 10, 000 mile oil changes. The 6000 mile recommended intervals are silly with improved filters and synthetic oil - plus the increased frequency of required visits to the dealers

Station-wagon vs. SUV? The term SUV was created to market the Kaiser Jeep Wagoneer which was definitely a station wagon. Why can't a car be both?

Tempting but I find it hard to trust a turbocharged engine longterm. Passport wins by virtue of its higher seating position and its venerable V6.
