Got the DeWALT DCL045 myself, which has a funky battery terminal that accepts 20V Max and 12V Max batteries. I liked it so much I got my friend the Craftsman CMCL090 version which doesn’t let you turn off one side. There’s also a motion-sensing DeWALT 20V Max-compatible Mac Tools MCL044 version that has a detachable flashlight but it’s needlessly expensive and I don’t like the idea of charging a battery off of a battery. Weirdly enough (since it’s not under the same Stanley-Black&Decker corporate umbrella as the other three) there’s also a Greenworks PA7210K/WLG907 version. All of them are bright enough but have different lumen outputs and some have fewer brightness levels. You know: Arbitrary limits to distinguish them.

I have one of the under hood lights and 3 of the Astro hand held lights. I am a marine mechanic mainly working on larger pleasure craft. I can't get enough light especially as I get older. I have tried a half dozen or eight different makes and shapes of lights but these Astros all are leaps ahead of the others I have tried. I left my under hood light in the cockpit of a boat in a monsoon. When I retrieved it a few days later I took it apart to dry it out but I found all of the electronics and the LED strip sealed. Including the switch. Absolutely no water intrusion. Great construction and much cheaper than the Milwaukee I was considering for $160 more. Without a battery or charger.

I remember the caged drop lights. Have the burn marks to prove it. They even came out with an LED version for nostalgia. I just can’t seem to find a work light that’s adequate. I’ve tried many, but they don’t seem to stay pointed in the direction you need them when you hang them by their hook or when you place them on the ground if you’re on a creeper. Closest I ever got was the Astro tools with a mag base and a hook that tucks in around it when not in use, but the hook usually got in the way of the magnet.

Eric when the cordless lights first started to get out I bought a few different types for My shop and it didn't take long for Me to keep them in My tool box and not let My other employee's to use Them. They were told to get their Own because they had a way to leave with the Car's that were there for repair's! My light stayed put! I actually had Customers Find them and bring them back and one fell from under the car and was in the middle of the Road in front of the Shop! True Story.

Light - an invaluable tool that gets more important with every year we get older. I dig this one you showed us because it hangs on by itself. I usually take one of those LED tubes and try to wrestle it up under the hood, or wherever else I am in the dark and need to see the ever increasingly smaller things I'm trying to fix. Yeah, this thing will come in handy. Can't believe I have not seen this before. Thanks for carving out a few minutes to enlighten us!

These Astro lights are cool. This one and the wireless charging handheld. However, I am deeply invested in Milwaukee M12 and I have a couple of their under good light bars I use for under hood work and interior work when I am fabricating roll cages and such. I normally use 2 at the same time to completely light the bare interior. If I had it to do over again I probably would buy the Astro lights. I especially like that they can be plugged in for long term use.

I have one of those - very handy.
They also make a smaller, flashlight-like light that has the same type of magnets and hook so you can stick almost anywhere.
Recently got this flexible light by OlsaTools that allows itself to bend in an arch - super handy for lighting up wheel wells. Also handy for getting into tight places.
I need lights, being almost blind at this age.
Thanks, Eric - I like youe tool of the day videos.

I found one at Costco. Infinity is the brand name. The bar stretches across the hood but it has 2 directional lights so you can aim the light where you need it. Also dimmable. The other features it has is both lights are magnetic and removable from the bar plus they are also Bluetooth speakers so you don’t have to whistle while you work, the speakers play your playlist

I like the Dewalt cordless hood light (DCL045B. Works with their 12V and 20V batteries, and it's two lights that folds in the middle so it's easier to store AND when folded the ends can serve as feet and you can use it as a stand up light. I like to use it like that to illuminate a wheel or wheelwell. It's also a LOT brighter than the Milwaukee version.

Astro lights are the bomb, no contest.
The one thing that's annoying is their lights _only_ charge with their charger. I tried a regular 90W usb C charger, and it does not work. No idea of these require old fashioned charger hardware and are unable to negotiate a charge on a modern (laptop) charger Or maybe they are hardcoded on the charger id.

Have two. The batteries don’t last long which is why I have two but they don’t fully charge by the time the other one dies. The cord is nice because it’s very long. Like you side it’s great for working inside the car. I’ve also used it to find a screaming cat in my yard at night. Lite the whole yard up

I'm really liking Astro Tools. The support they have shown you (The Dog) and quality of tools they make. I really like the lights you've shown. I have cheapo lights and the magnets are terrible. Can't wait to get some lights and sockets, and air tools, and . and.

Handier than a two pocket t-shirt. Ya got me with that one, never heard it before. Please keep the tool-of-the-day series going. There have been many times over the years where I'm trying to figure out what you're using and the secrets are slowly coming out. Thank you!

Thank you so much for the video of the day with the underhood work light. I have purchased your rechargeable Atlas light you reviewed earlier tool of the day. Awesome light. Thank you again. Keep up the great work and videos. From Lethbridge Alberta Canada.

I made a mistake with my battery light as I bought it from Clas Ohlson and it promptly broke. Maybe why they didn’t last long in the UK. However after a DIY solder job, it has been working fine and it is so useful to have around, not just for car work.

Yes, indeed. But I was just asking about the flashlight you've always got with you under car. about 8 of LED's on a swivel mounted to a magnetic base. You know the one. Maybe they're all just the same. Could be Astro

One of the best tools I’ve bought is my under hood light. I love that it can also be used in the passenger compartment and it’s both corded or cordless. I haven’t tested to see how much weight it can handle though

I have the DeWalt one because I had a lot DeWalt batteries. I use it way more than I thought, and I’m just a DIY mechanic with 6 vehicles to maintain. Highly recommend these kinds of lights

Thanks for the tool tip looks useful. And as long as you aren't the Tool of The Day it is a good day. I often have Tools of the day at my current job. I struggle to not point it out to them.

Man. You guys got the tricks these days! All I had in the 1970s was a couple beat up drop-lights with industrial bulbs! lol Of course, in those days I could still see. ;)
