The incident with the holes/bolts reminds me of something I did years ago. I was a graduate student in a molecular biology research lab and was learning how to do something called plating a lambda zap virus library. Near the end of the lengthy procedure I realized I messed up. It probably would have been OK for govt work. but I decided to start over. 12 hours later I finished it right. I know what you were going through. I gotta tell ya to Eric. I had not much to do today. I had already watched this series a couple years ago, and decided to watch it again today. Man I am glad I did too. It is a fantastic series, filled with lots of good stuff! I really appreciate you taking the time set up the camera. time away from your family. etc in order to film and edit it. Much appreciated!

I was going to make a comment similar to Hayward's Automotive. Everybody makes mistakes; the surgeon who fixed my hernia missed half of it. It seems simple to let the surgeon know and get it fixed, but I have a lower back brace that holds the hernia closed and provides lower back support as a bonus.
I almost died from diverticulitis, lost part of my intestines, spent two years recovering. Compared to more surgery, wearing an elastic back brace is simply easier than going through any more abdominal surgery again.
But everybody screws up, you caught the mistake and fixed it. Good for you.

Best sealant for that timing cover is the grey The right stuff sealant. It needs to be applied within 5 minutes. It dries quickly, seals well, and doesn't drift off like some silicone sealants do. I used it on my Kia Soul (timing chain replacement) and it worked great. There's 2 kinds of The right stuff sealant. Grey and Black. Black for Domestic, and Grey for Foreign models. Frankly I don't see the difference between them, but that's what they say.

Just looking back at your older videos. You are a true craftsman. And you are absolutely correct, you have to be true to yourself, even when no one is watching. Also, I learned from a wise journeyman many years ago, It's not really a 'mistake' as long as you correct it. It's a 'learning experience. ' Don't beat yourself up. You definitely have my respect. From a man with MANY learning experiences.

your repair work is just right, from now on whenever you install a chain, soak them in synthetic rear end lube all nite, first lube that chain sees keeps it from stretching on start up, the chain goes thru hell for the first 10 minutes or until oil sees it, the lube also cools it, same for the valve springs, i like your videos, you give a damn and you're a thinker, this keeps comebacks to a minimum

Playing catchup on an old video. Quick dumb question, is the torque spec given for wet or dry torque? I see you lubricated the bolts which would reduce the dry torque by 40-50% to get the same clamping force. Using dry torque spec on a lubricated bolt can result in thread failure or bolt failure due to excessive tensile stress put on the threads. Just wondering.

The way we did top end work at the Toyota dealership was to zip tie the chain to the timing gears and take them off the camshafts. That way they float in space while the head is off and you don't have to pull the timing cover at all. I'm not sure how it'll work with keeping the drill shavings out though.

One trick with those tensioners is instead of using the hook you push the piston all the way in then give it a little twist in the bore it causes it to stick just slightly and with a tap with a hammer on it once it's installed it will release on its own. its a huge time saver we use at the dealer.

I appreciate your attention to detail and your willingness to admit youre not perfect. It teaches a good lesson; its better to be ethical than perfect especially since its absolutely impossible to be perfect!
