Dodge Grand Caravan Lower Ball Joint - Part I

as replacing a ball joint on this 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan takes an unexpected turn and making this simple job drag out a bit Sutton: 12: 03 The secret with removing the rear brake drum (which is bolted onto a taper) off a Skoda Estelle was to apply torque to the puller whilst _simultaneously_ belting it with a club hammer. Was never defeated. Also always applied a smear of grease onto the shaft when refitting and never retightened it to 'factory specs'.
Am curious to know why the flame wrench didn't appear.

Even though this is an old SMA video i loved watching this. Im still relatively new to the trade with only about 1 year of professional experience. I work in Wisconsin so we get plenty of rust like New York and i have days like this sometimes where i do nothing but fight rust. Seeing a seasoned professional like Eric struggle like i do somedays makes me feel so much better.

hi mr o, as the saying goes the grass isnt always greener on the other side of the fence. south you would have to deal with the humidity. which i think you would dislike even more. you do a great job. i wish i lived closer so you could work on my toys. thanks for sharing your life with all of us.

For my tractor, I use 3/4 and a 8' cheater bar. Something's gonna give, one way or the other.
I'm don't own a shop, but if I did, I would have a policy that states: ' I'll spend 30 minutes trying to break through the rust. If not successful, you are buying a new axle, bearing, etc etc etc. '

Why are you beating on the screw of that press? It can't move. You destroy a good tool just for some vibration? Just screw the nut on backwards, with the flat side facing out, until it is flush with the end of the CV Shaft and hit that with the Sledge Hammer.
reply

you evidently didnt think this through. your beating on a threaded rod expecting it to push the axle through dont you think you are fighting the threads on the press when your beating on it. its like trying to pound a bolt through a nut!

Could have loosened the castle nut as much as you can and then lowered the arm with a flat bar then you would be able to remove the nut the rest of the way instead of wasting all that time messing with the axle
reply

i hope you hit it with the sledge without the press on there because when you were hitting it with the press on and tight the threads of the press were transferring all that energy to the rotor/hub not the shaft
reply

Just a quick question why not loosen the ball joint nut skittle then pickle fork the arm down a little and then bring the nut the rest of the way off while applying pressure to the fork?

Great job. very difficult but you made it so entertaining. great sense of humor. I wanted to see the video even though my van is a 2004 Grand Caravan. It has been a great car for us.
