Mazda Miata MX 5 - Clutch Replacement Job - Part I

This is the first video in a multi part series on replacing a clutch in a 1994 Mazda Miata MX5. The book time on the job is about 5 hours. Everything seemed to be going fine until we had to remove the rear bolts from the PPF (power plant frame) Needless to say, a little heat, a lot of air hammering, a few prayers and a can of WD40 I got them out!

I considered getting an old 91-93 Miata. Thought they'd be simple and easy to work on. Fun little car to play with. This series made me realize I'd rather just get its big brother, the 93-95 RX-7. Rebuilding a rotary is easier and quicker than replacing this clutch! (and if you take care of them, like any engine, you won't have to rebuild it very often like the meme suggests you'd have to)
book time of 5 hours. insane; add in any amount of rust belt woes, or just the fact these cars are approaching 30 years old and you get just about any vehicle poor Mr. O has to work on!
If you live in the rust belt, remember to bring in coffee and maple candy, at least if you are visiting SMA! (just don't let Mrs O know: D)

Hey bruh, why did you heat the metal up like that? Don't you know it is now as hard as glass? What are you going to do about that? Send me your P. O. and I will send you some of my magic fairy dust that loosens those bolts without you having to compromise the molecular structure.

I once struggled for three days trying to get a shock un-seized from the tower of my Tacoma. Ive also struggled for 4 days getting an engine/swing arm mounting bolt out of my Kawasaki KLR. As someone whos struggled a fair bit with rust, I enjoy seeing how pros tackle it.

Love all of your videos, but the call out at 48: 52 is absolute gold. I work on audi's, thankfully in CO now but started in VT with all the rust, and I would say that to everyone that asked why I charged so much.

Judging from Bronze (aftermarket) bushing on the end of the shift lever on the Miata, the shifter turret was re-built at some point, because OEM bushing was white nylon, and often failed. Shifter turret >>should

Mazda sure know how to put a car together. I have a Tribute. I know what your going through.
Look on the bright side. Just think of all the Mazda clutch jobs you're going to get.

bahahahaha. simple thermodynamics. heat makes things expand. therefore hopefully cracking the rust which is seized. To the Glass armchair bolt fairy dust man.

Are you wearing ear protection?
I was.
Why aren't you now?
Listen to Mrs. O, Eric. You want to be able to hear your grandkids some day.

Good video overall. It pisses me off when a mechanic doesn't cover the seats, then puts his tools on them. I had a leather seat ruined once.
