GM Truck- Exhaust Manifold Bolt Snapped Off In Head William: Hey Eric O. Don't listen to everyone else, your a good guy. Lol BTW the heating of the bolt works because of the T delta of the Aluminum block vs the steal bolt. Basicly the bolt heats up getting tight in the hole breaking the crusties up. The aluminum transfers heat away from the bolt very quickly making it shrink back to normal. Further breaking up the crusties. Seems counter intuitive until you understand how the different metals transfer the heat. Being the block is such a massive aluminum heat sink, the bolt hole never expands enough to make a difference.

I like to spray every nut and bolt and anything else that needs to come apart with the panther pee THEN go to lunch, get a coffee, or do something else for 10-40 minutes. The extra time seems to help.
As far as heating goes, it might be because of the locktite, but heating a bolt does two things. First, the nut or the aluminum block increases in diameter more than the bolt expands if both increase in temperature the same amount. Second, as the bolt heats, and before that heat transfers to the nut or block, it exerts pressure to compress the rust and oxidation, and slightly expands the hole in the nut or block, then it begins to cool and pulls away from the hole walls. The gap created from the diameter changes does not need to be much to break the crystallization and adhesion of the oxidation.
I also might have bad news: if the bolts come out too easily, it may not be from living right. When life gets too easy, it might be that the devil has already got you and has no more need to keep after you. If things are going wrong, you can rest assured that the battle is still on. To tell the difference, if things go well, do you thank the Lord for his blessing, or praise yourself for your skill or intelligence? When things go badly, do you ask for his help or just lose patience? I don t mean to get all preachy, but maybe this will help someone who is having difficulty with the stuck bolts in their life.

Eric, is there a reason the new manifold bolts are a gold color or coated with a golden tint? Will the gold coating make them easier to remove in the future? You must have read my mind. I was wondering if those were cracks around those header flanges bolts. I bet those manifold castings are a real bear to pour.
I don't know if you have ever been to a small parts, or large parts, foundry. I have and let me tell you, it STANKS, up in there. It smells worse than ass. And, man oh man, its hot in the summer time.
Great video. I appreciate all of the work you put into making a video with such great views. Top notch job. Thanks, Have a day.

After watching SMA for a long time now, it is apparent the noise levels a mechanic is subjected to will cause significant hearing loss over time. That is an unfortunate hazard of the job.
While not popular, I would suggest a set of custom made ear plugs that would stay in the ear but still allow hearing conversation.
There are many options available. An online service such as earplug super store would give you an idea of what is available.
I used these for many years at the gun range while shooting trap with good results. Good luck.

Questions from an idiot who just bought a 16 year old Chevy truck: 1. Some of the manifold holes, maybe just the middle ones, look like they are split. Do they come that way, or have they just broken? 2. When you put the manifold back on, the new bolts look gold colored. Are those specialty bolts made to deal with the heat? If so, will they last longer than the OEM ones? 3. Does it make any sense to have these bolts swapped out on some sort of regular basis while they are intact?

Thanks for using the great word purchase. seldom used nowadays but very accurate word. Good video. enjoyable. And from your favorite Texan Aerospace Engineer living in the Riviera that watches ALL your vids. it ain't the heat from the torch doing the job on rusty bolts, it's the coefficient of expansion and contraction: Scientifically, heat expands metals, which can break the bonds of rust. As metal cools, it contracts to break up rust. You're welcome Bro.

Glad to see you watch Paul from Utah. I bought a shirt from them and one from RL Autobody. I think you need to follow Matt and have a competition between you, Scotty, Ivan and the Steeler fan. Might work like - get a suitable patient with a faulty something. maybe two. Put it in a bay. Batter up and Mrs. O times how long til its correctly diagnosed. Sell shirts. And will Mapp heat up Loctited bolts like Oxy does? I think the tip/flame sized wont work.

A lot of the benefits I get from watching your videos is the procedures you use to tackle a certain problem.
The possibility of me doing the jobs you do are highly unlikely but the procedures can be adapted to other things and not just fixing vehicles. It s like watching and helping my dad do things when I was very young. Not everything is retained but the ideas that pop up in certain conditions, then you remember.
Thanks for the videos.

Great video. As for the camera, try your borescope and sync the audio from the other camera. Also, in the same vein as the GoPro, you can get really small spy camera type things that are the size of a matchbox that will give you HD fisheye views that you can stash in the tight spots. They're all going to cost you time in post production though. That said, no need for the apologies as your style ain't broke, so no need to fix it till it is.

So why work, when doing so is to keep a pampered legion of parasites in the comfort to which they ve become accustomed? Unless there is an opportunity to make real money, and live completely free of debt, you re better off on the dole and living contentedly within those modest means. Better that than stacking shelves for Walmart which, on current trends, will be the only work available soon anyway.

Nice job. Anytime I do exhaust manifolds. No matter the brand. I always run the engine up to operating temp then I immediately crack all the bolts to the cylinder heads. Works very well for me. Anytime I have a broken nub sticking out I spray it then hit it up, down, left and right and grab it with vise grips or my stud extractor. If the bolts are flush I usually can weld a nut and be good.

I'm a pilot and an aircraft mechanic so when I wasn't flying I would work on planes. Had a customer bring me his AgCat to fix an oil leak and this thing was dripping with oil from the engine to the tail. I asked him Damn! You ever wash this thing? He laughed and said I used to wash it until I realized it didn't make me anymore money when it was clean so I gave up on washing it.

Eric great video. Looking for some parts advice. 2021 Pilot. Front brake pads and non rusting rotors, What would you recommend. I've never owned any car or truck that went through brakes as fast as this turd. She has 30 K on the clock and the stealer says she's almost ready for brakes. I have never ever got less than 80 K on a set of brakes- Honda quality right there!

Man o man that looks like a job from hell. There are a half a dozen instances where experience paid off. One broken spark plug, another broken/stripped exhaust bolt etc could easily turn this into a full day of pain and sorrow. You knocked it out like a true experienced pro. Some jobs you can easily just follow the manual, but jobs like these it's pure experience.

On AliExpress, you can buy boxes of different clips like an assortment of many different kinds in packs of hundreds for literally like five dollars I recommend them to anyone who works on vehicles because as I m sure you know those plastic clips always break so it s nice to have a wide assortment of different ones to replace them with for a low price
