I can remember when I was 6 or 7 years old, every time mom took us to the A&P, we drove by this creepy old house way down this dirt road. Going to school on the bus all the kids would say it was a haunted house. One evening, in the middle of the summer, my father came in the driveway, after dark driving is bosses convertible MG Roadster. This was in the late 60's, early 70's She was a real beauty!
Anyway, he noticed coming home that the old haunted house looked like it might be on fire because the sky in the direction of old house was glowing pretty brightly in the sky. So, he asked if my younger sister and I wanted to take a ride in the roadster and go and see if the haunted house was, indeed, on fire. Just like he thought, as we passed by, on the same road that led to the A&P store, there she was fully engulfed in flame. He turned around and we road back home and went to bed. The next time my younger sister and I went to the A&P with my mom, drove by where the haunted house used to be and all that was left was the chimney. The rest had burned to the ground. So, there, my haunted house story.
What have you been do'n with the Excavator since we were last updated. Have you built a pond? Put in a well? Buried some relatives you really never liked? So, what up man! Take care!

Eric, I feel your pain, I worked in electronic and mechanical engineering for nearly 40 years and saw many many over engineered, flawed, easy to build, impossible to fix, and likely to have short lifespan products.
I have a 3/8 drill motor I bought more than 40 years ago that still works fine today. Do you think there is anything available today that will still be functional in 2063?
It s not just auto and truck industries that have their share of engineering disasters. I used to be an engineer for a large cable-communications company. The industry is rife with engineering methods and standards that were forced upon us from top down. There were no quick and reasonable fixes to anything. As if the mantra was why solve the problem with 50 in five minutes when you can take 5 weeks and spend 25k.
Retired now I, I took early retirement, I couldn t take it any more.

PS: I have a first gen Ford Escape 6 door with locks, (4 doors, hatch and hatch glass) not one lock shares parts with any other. ridiculous!

My 96 RAV 4 I had to pull the air box out to replace the evaporator and another part that a A/C shop didn't fix and the A/C still didn't work but had to pay 600. They ripped the box out and taped it up. Those screws were a pain and the passenger seat is in the way had to remove the glove box and some other things. It had an O ring leak when I evacuated it. So I had to take it back apart again. Not a happy camper then the blower motor went out they cut the plug off and wired something that wasn't even for the car. Amazing how much crap you find on a vehicle when your not even looking for it. Temper temper Eric I know how you feel just want them days to go away! Take care let off the steam.

My stepson's 2011 GMC Yukon (50K vehicle new) had a 'cutout' for the cabin air filter. But no filter. The replacement filter came with a plastic cover, and like this Buick, the unused bosses for the mounting screws were there. What a ridiculous design. But I suppose if the vehicle is in the rust belt, the rest of the machine will rot away before silly stuff like filters and blower motors would ever be needed.
BUT! I have a question on debris in the blower - Is there access through the cabin air filter to reach in an clear objects from the blower cage? Just curious.

As for the mini rant about folks popping in without a real problem just to see the place: I popped in in April on my way to a wedding in PA, I dropped off some baked goods cuz I'm a fan (even tho I don't work on cars, I was thrilled to see you and shake your hand, and I now know first hand that the lovely Mrs O is even lovelier in person. All of the ones in your area may have rusted to dust by now, but the '88-98 GMC/Chevy trucks needed partial dash disassembly to get the blower motor out. I had to pull the motor out of my '94 recently because there was so much plant debris in there that the thing just blew mulch everywhere any time it was on. Plus it squealed on High so I cleaned out the motor (it blew mulch into the motor cooling tube, surprise) and oiled the bearings before throwing it back in.

Hi Eric! I live in Louisiana and am in need of some headlight fluid so expect me in several weeks (The fluid leaks out) I also need some blinker fluid. Question: how do I get the fog outta my fog lights? Update: I don't have fog lights but it's foggy at night round here. Update to my update: my family wants to come with a variety of cousins and aunts/uncles. I guess we can throw Granny in the bed of my pick'em up. Thanks for the videos!

Eric, I'm sure plenty of posts tell you what to do. So I'll add another. If you had some event(s) that you could offer your fans, you might fill the need for people to meet you and make some profit selling merch, etc, in the process. Get your similar-themed creators involved and have a yearly meet-up? A booth at a nearby car event or something?
You can also just keep on doing what you be doing. I'll be fine either way, I'm sure. :)

That design is incredibly bad, but this stuff is really down to the consumer: If people aren't willing to change their buying habits to support cars that are better maintainable, then why would the manufacturers cater to that market?
You're doing a great job raising awareness of the extent of the issues. I hope you're charging more to do jobs like this too since it literally takes you more time and effort.

Try changing some cabin airfilters on certain Nissans, you have to remove the accelerator pedal assembly because its located in the case up next to where the lower firewall and centre tunnel meet. Even then you have to literally crush it down and jamb it in the small aperture and then play around with it so it returns to its shape before closing the cover and putting back the pedal assembly.

I'll just say 2 things. First, I remember a computer I used to work on that had a couple of chips that needed upgrading frequently and you had to remove 47 screws to get at them. Not fun at all. Second, I'll give long odds (like 10 to 1 or higher) that it was a management person that made the call to build it that way and not the engineer. Just saying.

There outta be a law stipulating installation and removal with time at dealer rate/hour of any part by the responsible from a completed vehicle. Any time over rate deducted from the responsible s pay check. The little pieces, screws this and that necessary to remove and subsequently replace with a kit.

I had an 88 Ranger that the blower motor began crapping out in 90 during our homeymoon. I installed a new Ford motor. Easy to R&R. The replacement crapped about a year later. I bought a Siemens motor at a parts store and used taps to connect the pigtails. No plug; the motor socket was the problem. The Siemens lasted the life of the vehicle!

My brother-in-law retired from Chrysler as a engineer and he told me that a lot of this kind of engineering happens because at certain points a lot of the vehicle has already been designed and now it gets to the point where other components have to be installed and they have to come up with solutions

The Big 1. 5! Is that Big Enough to even run AC? Eric, it's not engineers, it's management. They don't turd engineers aloose on a design like a terd of wild horses, management always has to oversee each project. They have THINK TANKS who decide how it will be done(cost) G'day. ben/ michigan

Obviously in this one, the fan controller IS good - but twice now (over the course of several years) I've had the controller go out on my TrailBlazer. The 2nd time I said screw it, and just the replaced the mosfet in it for about 50 cents! Beats the 60-80 or whatever it was for a whole unit.

Chevy Sonic is the same way. I used an oscillating multi tool to cut through the darn plastic. Took about 15 minutes and was much better than using a utility knife like I started to use. After I slipped the first time with the knife, I moved on to power tools.
